Book Description

8 and up3 and upSecrets of Dripping Fang,
Nobody wants to adopt the Shluffmuffin twins. Wally’s feet stink something awful, and Cheyenne is allergic to everything. Then why are the Mandible sisters so eager to take them home? And what sort of old maids would choose to live in a place called Dripping Fang Forest, where zombies wander the woods singing “Itsy Bitsy Spider” and ten-foot-long glowing slugs want to suck the feet right off your ankles?
Would it seem ungrateful of Wally to point out the Mandible sisters’ extra arms? Or to question their all-chocolate, all-the-time menu? Or, um, to venture into the cellar, where the twins have been told to NEVER, EVER, EVER go?
Yeah, perhaps that last bit was a mistake. Now there’s nothing left for the Shluffmuffins to do but run–run for their lives!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5–The influence of Lemony Snicket looms large in this mock gothic tale. The 10-year-old Shluffmuffin twins long to be adopted out of the Jolly Days Orphanage. Unfortunately, Cheyenne's constant nose-dripping allergies and Wally's vile-smelling feet repulse most prospective parents. The elderly Mandible sisters, however, are oddly elated over the children's hygiene issues and take them home, on trial, to their weird mansion deep in Dripping Fang Forest. The Onts, as the old ladies want to be called, provide comfortable rooms and delicious chocolate meals, but they warn the youngsters never to go into the cellar. Suspicious Wally does just that, and discovers that the sinister seniors are really giant ants in disguise, plotting to raise an army of ravenous oversized insects to reclaim the universe from humankind. This episode ends before the kids can alert the rest of the world, but a sequel is certainly being spun. Adults may be put off by the constant references to snot and boogers, but fans of the genre take this sort of thing in stride. Eerie black-and-white drawings complement the heavily tongue-in-cheek plot. While this is a bit over-the-top even for this genre, it is worth considering where demand for Snicket-style fantasy is especially strong.–Elaine E. Knight, Lincoln Elementary Schools, IL

Review

"Here's a funny scary bizarre adventure book you should read. If I were a giant insect, I would give it six thumbs up. " Jon Scieszka, author of The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales and The Time Warp Trio series (Jon Scieszka, author of The Stinky cheese Man )

"Boy, was this a pleasure to read! I was hooked from page one. I loved every minute I spent with the Shluffmuffin twins, although I have to admit I was glad I was safe in my own house and nowhere near Dripping Fang Forest." (James Howe, author of Bunnicula )

"Wally and Cheyenne Shluffmuffin want to leave Jolly Days Orphanage, and they get their wish when the old Mandible sisters adopt them. But with a new home in eerie Dripping Fang Forest, and the Mandibles forbidding them to enter certain rooms, their new house might be creepier than what's lurking outside in the forest." (Disney Adventures (Nov 2005) ) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best for interesting non-readers!!, September 13, 2005
I have an 8 year old son (soon to be 9) in 4th grade who, before this book, absolutely hated to read! I had to make him read aloud to me in order to make sure he read anything. He read this book silently in its entirety and was excited enough about it to stop periodically and demand I listen to him explain the story! I've already pre-ordered the next 3 books in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun, silly, fast-paced book you can't put down!, November 15, 2005
I teach Reading to 6th graders. Received two copies of this book from a friend and thought I would read the first few chapters to my students on Halloween. The were so interested in it that the next day they begged me to read more!! How could I say no?? Several went online that night and bought their own copies and pre-ordered Greenberg's second book in this series. Meanwhile, I have a waiting list of students wanting to check out one of the two classroom copies to see what becomes of Wally and Cheyenne. They just can't get enough. I love their enthusiasm, and like them, can't wait for Book Two.

4.0 out of 5 stars For kids who enjoy the scary things lurking about!, October 19, 2005
By
Dan Greenburg has hit on a series of books that children between 8 and 12 will absolutely love. It has all things creepy, scary and funny that kids will read as fast as they can and ask for the next installment.

The Shluffmuffin twins, Wally (who has awfully stinky feet) and Cheyenne (who has allergies and constantly sneezes) are orphans. They lost their father when he fell through the seat of a Porta Potti and drowned. The following day, their mother was smothered by a gang of angry bunnies at a petting zoo. Then 98-year-old Grandma Gloria was carried off by a nearsighted eagle. He mistook her for a racoon. There were no other family members to care for them so off they went to The Jolly Days Orphanage. It was not a good place to be.

The twins longed to be adopted but it didn't happen until the day the Mandible sisters brought them home for a week-long adoption trial. The sisters live in Dripping Fang Forest and seem to have extra arms. Things are pretty strange at the Mandible house and if Wally and Cheyenne aren't careful, they could end up at the wrong end of the food chain.

Armchair Interviews says: This is a book for kids that enjoy the scary things that lurk in the night and sometimes during the day, right where they live.
