Review

Credit F.A.Manske Jr. for the most enlightening book about leadership, its ethics, problems and how to solve them. From the start of SECRETS OF EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP to the page listing the Ten Commandments of Leadership, Manske proves without a doubt that he is a master of the subject. He is not a theorist; he is a hands on professional. His book is a must for any man or woman who wishes to be an outstanding leader in any field or endeavor. --Sidney H. Ascher, Syndicated Columnist, Gannett Newspapers

Manske brings enough inspiration and uplift to recharge tired batteries and refocus your attention on why you picked this line of work in the first place. --M. Donald Thomas, The Executive Educator

The book is important because it is a collection of learning experiences by people who, having faced and dealt with uncomfortable situations, discovered the most desirable methods for achieving effective leadership. --Susan Dugal, Baylor Business Review

If you want to make sure you have the proper skills to lead in the best way possible, then the book Secrets of Effective Leadership: A Practical Guide to Success is for you ... it is a guide meant to shorten the amount of time it takes to develop your skills to become a leader. This is a book that can get you to the leadership role you want and deserve much faster than you might think possible. It is also a great resource to use in your management meetings. --restaurant-books.com

Format: Hardcover
This book was excellent. The one really important aspect of this book that I enjoyed the most was the easy to read and understand format, but also that he stressed his points using many life experiences of his own. I find that when a real life experience is used to enforce a point that I am able to remember the point that much easier. I did not just learn how to be an effective leader, but I also learned how to deal with situations of my life that do not necessarily apply to leadership such as stress and healthy living.
Another important that Manske Jr. did was to use quotations from people who are important AND unimportant in order to show greatness. He also showed his points through use of very important people such as Presidents and Owners of companies. When I started reading the book, I had not realized how complicated being a leader was, I never really thought about it, and even though he acknowledges that leading is not an easy task, he makes it seem as though if anyone put their mind to it, they can be a leader. For instance I had never thought that courage is important in leading others. And although I knew it in the back of my mind, I did not think about how one has to deal with the fact that they will not win all of their people over, some may dislike them.
One final aspect that I liked was the fact that he can speak from experience as anyone who reads this book will know, for he has experienced many instances on learning how to lead. He did not act like he was a leader from the beginning or that he was a perfect leader. He stressed that leaders make mistakes, all people do, but to learn from them is key to leading effectively.
There are two negatives that I find in this book.

Format: Paperback
"Secrets of Effective Leadership: A Practical Guide to Success" by Fred A. Manske is a reasonably comprehensive, highly comprehensible, and surprisingly refreshing leadership book, and is one of the few books on the subject written by someone who was actually a leader, rather than an ivory-tower academician attempting to derive something meaningful from his or her research study. Though not a profound classic such as Henri Fayol's "General and Industrial Administration [1916]," "Secrets" nonetheless offers the reader an excellent return on his or her time, covering many of the basics and some more advanced points of leadership. And is certainly in the upper 20% of leadership books as far as content is concerned. The reader will find many actionable recommendations which he or she can start using immediately without having to figure out what the author is trying to say and how to shift from the theoretical to the practical. A quick read and highly valuable to lower and intermediate level managers and those senior level executive suite denizens who somehow missed the fundamentals on their way up to the supervisory penthouse. If anything, it is unfortunate that Manske did not dig deeper given his experience and depth of knowledge.
