Author Palumbo has done the Hakkoryu Jujutsu community a great service by publishing a very easy-to-use series of books on its history and techniques. The only weakness is that, when presenting a technique using photographs, it is not always clear to someone reading his books how one position flows to another. It seems like there should be one or two more photographs showing the changes in foot positions so that the student doesn't get lost in the shuffle.

One of the many Jujitsu styles I have studied was the Hakko Ryu system. I had the pleasure of attending a seminar on Hakko Ryu Jujitsu given by Kaiden Shihan Palumbo many years ago. The seminar was hosted by Brian Smith, a Hakkoryu Jujitsu expert, at his dojo in Chicago Heights. This is the first in a series of three books written by Mr. Palumbo on Hakko Ryu Jujitsu. This text is a very good introduction to Hakkoryu Jujitsu, which means "School of Eight Light." The material covered in this volume includes: What is Hakkoryu jujitsu, the theory of training, training methods in jujitsu, the way of learning and shodan techniques. In conclusion, this is a book that will be of value for all jujitsu students, no matter what style or system.
