Book Description

Harlequin Historical April 1, 1997
A Widow With A Secret

Though Catie Hazard had never forgotten the youthful soldier to whom she had given her innocence years before, she had never expected to lay eyes on Anthony Sparhawk ever again. Especially not as an officer of an invading army!

That he might recognize the country girl from his past, behind the refined widow she had become, was bad enough. But what would happen if the British major ever discovered the daughter she had kept so carefully hidden, with the emerald green eyes of a Sparhawk?

From Library Journal

After American Colonist Catie Willman becomes pregnant by a young soldier bound for England, she marries an innkeeper, knowing she'll receive no other offer. Her soldier, fellow American Anthony Sparhawk, returns eight years later?as an officer in the invading British army. In a powerful story that transcends its historical setting, Jarrett explores the effects of distrust, divided loyalties, and long-kept secrets on a love sprung from a brief, passionate encounter. Jarrett is the winner of Romantic Times Reader's Choice Award; her Sparhawk's Angel (Harlequin, 1996) is a 1997 Rita finalist in the same category. She lives in Pennsylvania.

5.0 out of 5 stars Miranda Jarrett's best Sparhawk novel yet, April 18, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: The Secrets of Catie Hazard (Sparhawks) (Harlequin Historicals, No 363) (Paperback)
In 1767 Newport, Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantation, seventeen year old Catie Willman works as a serving maid in a sailor's tavern. All seems to go well for the innocent teenager until she serves Anthony Sparhawk, who thinks she is very pretty. Spellbound by him, Anthony takes her in body and soul, but leaves her heartbroken when he offers money for her "service". She refuses and he departs without knowing her name. ..... In 1776 Rhode Island, the widow Catie Hazard now owns and runs the tavern that she inherited from her deceased spouse. When she learns that some British soldiers, including Major Anthony Sparhawk, will be quartered at her tavern, she quickly hides her eight year old daughter, Belinda, at a nearby farm for the child's safety and to keep Anthony from recognizing the truth about the girl's lineage. ....... When Anthony arrives, he fails to recognize Catie, but finds himself extremely attracted to her. She has loved Anthony for the past decade. However, though both quickly fall in love, their loyalties are diametrically opposite, leaving little room for compromise, and thereby, no chance for any lasting relationship as long as the bloody war continues. Than there remains the question of how Anthony will react if he ever uncovers THE SECRETS OF CATIE HAZARD. ....... This novel will leave readers with two different moods: the joy of reading a great Colonial romance and the melancholy of realizing that this is probably the last of the incredible Sparhawk saga. Like its predecessors, this is a great novel. Perhaps, if readers start a campaign, Ms Jarrett can be convinced to start Sparhawk, the Next Generation. Another marvelous winner by Miranda Jarrett. .......Harriet Klausner

5.0 out of 5 stars The best!!!:-), July 5, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Secrets of Catie Hazard (Sparhawks) (Harlequin Historicals, No 363) (Paperback)
Catie Willman Hazard had been through a lot. And it all had started with a young man, Anthony Sparhawk, who now seemed to re-enter her life, but now as her enemy, he had become an English soldier. After long years she had become a widow, but also a patriot as the Revolutionary War had begun. She was a very respected woman in town, who kept her head up high with authority in any man's presence. But now she found herself falling in love (with her enemy), even though she had many more SECRETS of her own...

This is a very very good romance book that I would most definitely recommend to all those who enjoy romance stories. Ms. Miranda Jarret has certainly done a great job in writing The Secrets of Catie Hazard. It is one of the romance books that kept me turning the pages until the very end. -- MC14
