Book Description

Madeline Whittington, daughter of the deceased Earl of Richfield, emerges from English society’s prescribed period of mourning in the winter of 1815. Madeline believes that she no longer belongs in a world of gossip and gowns; instead she wants to help the orphans living within the walls of Ashcroft Insane Asylum. Once there, she discovers a dark secret within the asylum walls.

Because of his elder brother’s unexpected death, Devlin Greyson becomes Earl of Ravensmoore and struggles between two worlds: one of affluence and privilege and one of poverty and disease. Torn between his desire to become a doctor and the numerous responsibilities of his title, he wrestles with God’s will for his future. Will he be able to honor this God-given gift and win the woman he falls in love with in a society that does not value gentlemen who work? And will Lady Madeline Whittington be able to honor her father’s memory when she is attracted to the one man who could destroy the promise she made to her father?

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding debut novel! July 3, 2011
I purchased this book because the synopsis grabbed my attention. I'm so glad I did. This book was absolutely wonderful! Madeline Whittington is still mourning her father after he dies in a hospital and she blames all doctors for his death, one in particular. She has forgotten God and doesn't call His name anymore because she believes He has forgotten her as well.
Devlin is an earl but trained as a physician, to the dismay of all his social class. He feels God has called him to help others through his skills as a doctor. He tends to Maddie when she falls from her horse and she remembers him as the doctor who let her father bleed to death. (She thinks.)
I will not go into details further so as not to spoil it for other readers who have not purchased the book.
This debut novel from Jillian Kent is a wonderful read and I definitely look forward to more from her. By the way, she includes a nice little sample of the next book in the series and it promises to be as good as the first. This one is for my 'keeper' shelf!

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down June 7, 2011
I just had a new baby and when I found myself HOPING the baby would wake up in the middle of the night so that I could read more of this novel, I knew I was hooked. Jillian Kent does a fabulous job of creating a story around characters that feel like friends and of bringing up historical and social issues in a way that makes you want to know more. I highly recommend this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Suspense and mystery with Regency flair. May 18, 2011
I remember seeing an old black and white movie years and years ago, but I can't remember its name. (I'll have to ask my mom...maybe she remembers?) I vividly recall a woman in a dark, gloomy insane asylum, seemingly lost, surrounded by laughing, crying, screaming, swaying people. I believe she was put there under false accusations, but was so `out of it' that she couldn't say she wasn't supposed to be there.

(Thanks to a reader of my review, the mystery is solved: The Snake Pit, starring Olivia de Havilland! The Snake Pit Thanks, Susan!!!)

I imagined this movie scene over and over again while reading Secrets of the Heart.

Jillian brings to light the misunderstandings and mistreatment of depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders suffered by people in the Regency era. It was sad and yet fascinating at the same time.

Several times in the first few chapters, I thought the writing was disjointed a bit. I even flipped back pages to see if I'd missed something. I hadn't, so I just shook my head and continued.

As the story progressed, however, the writing flowed smoother, and the plot kept me engrossed. Secrets of the Heart gives readers an ample amount of suspense and mystery delivered with Regency flair.

I liked it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing Romantic Suspense November 6, 2011
"Secrets of the Heart" combines historical romance with the danger, intrigue, and suspense, of an action filled mystery novel.

Conflicted with the traditional expectations of the mores of the aristocracy of British upper curst e during the Regency era in 18l7 Madeline Whittington is faced with the personal challenge of exchanging the unfulfilled life of her role as Lady Whittington for a more meaningful life of purpose and a passion for helping others. She also finds herself as she finds herself romantically attracted to the man she holds responsible for her father's death.

The story has a good flow, engaging characters, with page turning danger and adventure.

Award winning author Jillian Kent introduces the demons of depression, doubt, and anxiety, the result of mistreatment and misunderstanding from the darker side of life. She shows amazing insights into the grieving process and a sensitive look at mental illness,

"Secrets of the Heart" the first in the trilogy "Ravens Moore Chronicles" has all the ingredients for establishing Jillian Kent a growing base of readers who enjoy Christian fiction, historical romance, as well as readers of the suspense and adventure novel.

A complimentary copy of this book was provided for review purposes. The opinions expressed are my own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not your Mama's Regency Romance July 30, 2011
It's tempting to try to cram all regency romances into a single box. But Jillian Kent's Secrets of the Heart isn't concerned with the typical backdrop of balls and arranged marriages.
Madeline Whittington has suffered a series of losses that have made her withdraw from society and although her official mourning period is over, she's having a difficult time delving back into the frivolous round of fashion and fetes.

The new Earl of Ravensmoore, Devlin Grayson, knows all about hanging on the fringes of society. As a younger son he had looked forward to a career as a physician. Then both his father and brothers passed away and the earldom devolved to him. Faced with a decision he chose to scandalize society by continuing to train for the profession he loved.

The two serious outsiders seem made for one another, but Madeline blames Devlin for her beloved father's death. He was there and Madeline is certain that if he hadn't botched the care, her father would still be alive and the odious Lord Vale would not be courting her mother.

Toss in a mysterious woman who won't speak, a creepy lunatic asylum, and the labyrinthine mind of a dangerous opponent and you have a story that draws more from Jane Eyre than Jane Austin.

It was May of 2011 that my first book, Secrets of the Heart, The Ravensmoore Chronicles, Book One hit the shelves. My books have been published during a tumultuous time in the publishing world. It's a constant personal challenge of seeking balance while writing new books, working as a counselor, and enjoying my family. This has taken the development of new self-management skills. I'm happy to tell you that Book Three in the series, Mystery of the Heart will release in January 2013 with the youngest sister, Mercy's story and is now available for pre-order. Of course you will be reunited with many of the characters, that I hope you've developed a fondness for, in the previous two books. Mystery of the Heart will complete this series.

If you read Book One you know I'm fascinated with human behavior and how our minds work. This will be even more clear to you if you read Chameleon.:)Nominated for the Daphne du Maurier Award. Winners will be announced in Atlanta, Ga. the week of July 17th. Here's the link to the complete list of those nominated:

If you do read CHAMELEON;PLEASE don't give away the ending so that others can enjoy the journey the whole way through to its conclusion. Once again you will find yourself in Regency England. You will return to Bedlam. You will meet Devlin's sister, Victoria, aka, Snoop. It won't take long to find out why the family calls her Snoop. I hope you will escape into the past with me and you, just like some of my characters may find faith for the future. If you are a sleuth at heart you will love this story.
