A go-to guide for making a good impression successfully competing for opportunities.,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Secrets of the Hidden Job Market: Change Your Thinking to Get the Job of Your Dreams (Paperback)
Secrets of the Hidden Job Market: Change Your Thinking to Get the Job of Your Dreams is a no-nonsense guide to getting hired. Chapters cover how to avoid the traps inherent in the traditional system of networking ("Executive recruiters are not in business to get you hired. Never forget you are there for the recruiter's benefit; they are not there for yours."), the crucial importance of properly preparing a resume ("The design of your resume is irrelevant; the only things that matter are what your resume says and how Mr. Bigg feels as he reads it."), the importance of maintaining a positive outlook ("Like everything else, your belief about your age becomes your experience. When you stop believing your age is a problem in your getting hired, it will cease to be one.") and much more. Written in plain terms for readers of all backgrounds, Secrets of the Hidden Job Market is a go-to guide for making a good impression successfully competing for opportunities.

A great reality check!,
By Kristy J. "midwest career counselor" (Midwest, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Secrets of the Hidden Job Market: Change Your Thinking to Get the Job of Your Dreams (Paperback)
This book is quite different from other career books, and that's what I like about it. White teaches the reader how to focus on things that will work in your job search, and identifies things that don't. She has some strong examples of time wasters & offers strategies that bring better results. Some of her writing is intended to jolt the reader into waking up and taking a more powerful stance in the job search...aligning oneself with the interview as an equal partner, insted of giving the interviewer all of the power in the process. I think the book would be a great wake-up call for new college grads and for those who are transitioning into a new career. White teaches both groups how to emphasize their strengths while standing out for the right reasons. Good pick!

Law of Attraction for Job Seekers,

In my experience this book has done the best job of combining Law Of Attraction (LOA) with the potentially frustrating experience that is the traditional job search. Ms. White's approach is quite thorough. From writing a resume that really "tells your story" to how to handle those tough interview questions, this book covers all the bases. I'm not saying buying this book will get you a job, but since reading it I've had 3 people approach me about working for or with them.

Reviewed by Cathy Yanda for Reader Views (10/06)You're not "filling an opening;" you're solving a company's problem. When you look at job seeking in this manner, everything you are currently doing changes and so does your success. With "Secrets of the Hidden Job Market," Janet White will revolutionize the way look for your next job. She gives you the inside scoop on recruiters, want ads, human resources, headhunters, employment agencies, resume services, and more. Do you have a job objective you can write in six words or less? Should your resume be written from the employer's perspective? Do you think you are never too old to have the job of your dreams? Do you believe you have the experience for your dream job? Should your cover letter be written like a sales letter? Do you know whether you should accept a beverage from the interviewer? If so, do you know why? Should you avoid discussing your current or past compensation during the interview? Is your follow-up call about the employer? Should the interviewer do most of the talking during the interview? Have you done the research and have a list of companies you WANT to work for? Janet points you to the correct answers. Unless you responded `yes' to all of these questions, this book should be on your desk. When you want something badly enough and believe it's already yours, the impossible becomes possible. Janet explains the difference between being a traditional job seeker and a contrarian. There are a few things you need to remember: 1) The universe will give you whatever you focus on., 2) Know what you want and believe it is already yours., 3) Decide what you want to do and take the proper actions to allow it to come to you., 4) Do your homework. If you are serious about finding the position you want, with the company you have chosen, "Secrets of the Hidden Job Market" is the book for you. If you prefer to go about job hunting in the same old way, with the same tired results, purchase a copy of this book for your best friend. They can loan it to you after they get the job of your dreams. Book received free of charge

I would be embarrassed to provide this to anyone. Chapter 8 has the title misspelled on every page. Who proofed this book? The resumes in Chapter 7 before and after must be switched since the before document looks much more organized than the After document. HR staff and hiring managers will spend ~15 seconds scanning resumes. They had better be organized. What a waste of time and money.
