Editorial Reviews

Review

Filled with believeable events and details, this novel has just enough suspense to keep the pages turning. -- Publisher Comments

From the Publisher

The Wallace family is so real they could be your neighbors, friends, or even your own family. The situations are so real they are truly believeable.

The Wallaces invite you into their home and lives and show you quite vividly that even though you are part of a family, there is still a lot to learn about each other.

If you don't want to read about family drama, this probably isn't the book for you. But, it may be worth a read if you liked the TV show "Brothers & Sisters". The drama in "Secrets" reminded me of that show, or maybe Ruth reminded me of Nora.

In any case, I agree with the other reviewers who couldn't stop reading; it was certainly enjoyable and left you hanging at the end of each chapter, wanting for more. Like others, the ending was rather disappointing. It felt very abrupt with the introduction of new characters, but more importantly, the handling of some of the main characters was unfortunate (trying not to spoil the story here). It's good to know that a sequel is in the works, because I would like to read more.

However, while the story was good, it was very difficult to follow, due to the massive number of characters. I think another reviewer said it right - you need a family tree - or a relationship diagram. I found myself frequently returning to previous pages just to figure out who was who. If there were fewer characters, I think there would have been more time to develop each of them in more depth. I was also left wondering about the oldest sister's (and her husband's) 'problem' in the first chapters, because it never came up again. It seemed as though that would have been a major part of their story, but it just quietly disappeared.

I could NOT put this book down. I LOVED it....until towards the very end! I kept thinking, "what am I missing here?" I felt I was left in the dark at the end regarding 3 characters and believe me, I was living, eating and breathing this book! I'm re-posting my review because the first one would have ruined everyone's ending.

I deplore reviews that give away the ending...and/or the entire plot. AFTER POSTING THE NEGATIVE REVIEW, REGARDING WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A 10 STAR BOOK **********, UNTIL THE END, Mr McCracken wrote me back! What a cool guy! He will be writing a sequel!!! YES, YES, YES... Now it makes sense! I will say, I love the honesty that was portrayed in this family full of secrets! I LOVED the Mother of this family and wished I were more like her!!! She was a ROCK through all the secrets and stress and unknown about her own children and their spouses! And she loved each of them unconditionally~~

Again, thanks Mr McCracken for replying to my review!!! More books like this need to be written because EVERY FAMILY, EVERY PERSON has a story to tell~~

I really liked this book from the beginning and I kept turning the pages with excitement despite it reminding me of a tv soap in the last third of the book. I actually got so involved in the storylines that I read the second half of the book in one afternoon's sitting. However, I really felt cheated with the ending which I won't give away here. I was so disappointed with the final pages and feel not only was I cheated but that the author betrayed and cheapened one of the characters I got to like very much.

Did I misunderstand the ending? Perhaps, but if I did I don't believe it's my fault. The ending spoilt the whole book for me.

I just finished reading Secrets and I just loved it! It made me cry a lot but it also made me laugh and smile a lot too. The characters are so clear and real. It is an excellent book. I hope McCracken publishes many more.

In every family gathering described in the book drama happens and secrets are revealed. The character development is mostly poor. The emotional and psychological impact the secret or drama has on the rest of the family is dealt with relatively superficial. From my perspective nothing is really dealt with in depth. This together with quite a number of editorial oversights make it feel like the book was written in a rush.
