Book Description

December 23, 2011
Stalking your pet's former owners. Faking your death to get out of paying back your student loans. Stealing your co-worker's cat to teach her a lesson about hygiene. These are secrets and these are lies. Sometimes they're both. They're also just a few of the stories in Secrets and Lies, author Josh Gross's debut collection examining things people prefer to hush up and gloss over. In this book, you'll get inside the head of a cynical competitive debater forced to logically justify the existence of love, see an alternate history in which Congress banned heartbreak after the tragic events of February 14th and even experience abortion from a male perspective. With Gross's wicked wit and wordplay focused through a lens equal parts existentialist and absurd, you'll be riveted from cover to cover. In fiction, everything is a lie. Unless it's a secret.

About the Author

It’s hard to pin a label on Josh Gross. Not because his work is unclassifiable, but because it stretches across such a breadth of mediums. After gaining notoriety as a founding member of seminal Southern Oregon punk rock band, The VAM Commanders, Gross turned his abilities in songwriting towards storytelling as a whole, and began penning scripts for stage and screen, while paying the bills as a journalist and continuing to perform as a musician and standup comedian. One film Gross wrote, The Lost Van Gogh, recently premiered at The White Sands International Film Festival and won the Audience Choice Award at the Tulsa International Film Festival. He is also a frequent contributor to the Boise State Public Radio live storytelling series, Story Story Night.

5.0 out of 5 stars Secrets & Lies December 26, 2011
Format:Paperback
I've been a fan of Josh Gross for years now, and I am very pleased to have the opportunity to read this collection of short stories. His brilliance transcends medium and genre (Ace reporter, produced playwright, stand-up comedian, novelist and internationally recognized rock'n'roll superstar) so if you haven't been exposed to this guy I encourage you to pick something up- an album, a copy of boise weekly, and especially a hot-off-the-press copy of Secrets & Lies. It is fresh, a great read, and something that gets you thinking. The stories range from whimsical to dark-heady-realism, but are always touched by JG's characteristic sass. There is a disarming tenderness in this collection too, especially in "One Friday in April". Pick up a copy, it will make you laugh, and feel feelings.

This collection is an emotional rollercoaster. I laughed a lot, cried a little, then laughed myself to tears. The book is addictive, so pick up a copy and carve out some time, because you won't be able to put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as cheating on your wife. December 30, 2011
By Shy
Format:Paperback
I have a process when I read books. Simple first come first serve.
Short of reading maybe a page here or there, I stick to it. When I picked up Secrets & Lies, I immediately caved and read the first story. Feeling guilty, I returned to the book who had dutifully waited it's turn. Not unlike the sensation that I've left the stove on, S&L itched at my brain, breaking my routine one day at a time.

It won of course.

Not only did it win, it may have ruined other books for me. I keep picking out stories and re-reading them. I fear my process will never recover.
It was completely worth it.
