4.0 out of 5 stars For Nikon Users!
This is a great book if you already have some knowledge of photography and own Nikon equipments. I already owned Nikon gear when I bought this book. So it was very helpful. Also there are lots of things that you can learn from it even if you have camera other than Nikon. The quality of pictures were very good and his writing style is easy to understand. 2.0 out of 5 stars VERY limited scope
This book would prove to be of utmost benefit to those who use a Nikon camera and an SB series flash. You would also benefit from the book if you are taking pictures for large corporations, which the author says has not been done since the 1980s. The book is a little too limited in scope to prove to be of great value. SOME of the diagrams are helpful.

He really shows way to get great effects with one or more than one light source. This book motivated me to shoot more challenging pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very clear, yet detailed instructions, October 27, 1999

This review is from: Secrets of Lighting on Location: A Photographer's Guide to Professional Lighting Techniques (Paperback)
The before and after shots in this book are spectacular. For example, Krist shows you a picture in an ordinary lab room with flourescent lights and no special lighting. Then he shows you how to make it a magazine-quality photo with light fillers, gels, etc. Exceptional book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Master at Lighting--Bob Shows You How, December 9, 1999
This review is from: Secrets of Lighting on Location: A Photographer's Guide to Professional Lighting Techniques (Paperback)
Bob Krist is a master photographer who has come across all the difficult lighting problems and has found ways to overcome then. He shows you how he did it--in a clear explanation and with diagrams. Bob shows many comparison shots-- of how the shot looked and what he did to make it a great shot. Bob is a down to earth photographer who shows how to use what you have and not go out and buy the store for a shot. I recommend this book for all levels of photogrhers who want to make better pictures.

The best, most carefully written book on location lighting I've read. Needs to be updated for digital (all references are to film and the associated color correction issues). Can be skimmed for the great examples, each explained in detail, or read through to get his narrative as well. Most of the work has been for national magazines, so it is slick and impressive. I will read and re-read this book.

Excellent book that emphasizes multiple lighting sources for on location photography. . .mostly corporate type photos. Gives detailed examples throughout the book. You can look at the photo and then review the detailed info (inlcuding diagrams) of how the lighting was achieved. Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books on lighting., December 19, 2005
This review is from: Secrets of Lighting on Location: A Photographer's Guide to Professional Lighting Techniques (Paperback)
In reality it doesn't matter what camera system you have, this book is a boon to anyone interested in any kind of lighting, studio, location, what ever. Many of the shots were done with a studio system or non-dedicated flash units. Bob Krist is a master at blending ambient light and flash and shows you how to do it in numerous situations with many real world examples. On top of that he gives you an insight into lighting for scientific/technical subjects I have not seen in other books. This book is a great find, don't pass it up!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not very helpfull, August 21, 2000

This review is from: Secrets of Lighting on Location: A Photographer's Guide to Professional Lighting Techniques (Paperback)
I agree with the other post. Great if you have a Nikon flash, but not much help with other types of lighting solutions. The author needed to get into more detail other than just flash photography. Also, the writing was hard to follow and confusing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book !, August 10, 2007
This review is from: Secrets of Lighting on Location: A Photographer's Guide to Professional Lighting Techniques (Paperback)
Of all the photography books I have read, and/or have sitting on my shelf, this is still my favorite.
Yes, the technology is outdated.
Yes, the corporate gigs he shoots are past the limits most photographers will ever experience.
But the techniques he uses, thoughts behind his style, and photos he creates are timeless.
This book may not be the best for the amateur photographer. But as an experienced photographer, I love flipping through the book to get inspiration, ideas and options.
And, the shoots he outlines in the book are even easier in today's digital world of Pocket Wizards and multiple lighting options.
If you are to the point in your career (or hobby) where you want to become more creative in your lighting, you won't regret purchasing this fine book.
