5.0 out of 5 stars Stellar!
I have been a fan of Ken Andrews since I heard Fantastic Planet for the first time. From Failure to Year Of The Rabbit and now solo, his skill and talent conitnue to shine through.

2.0 out of 5 stars Review of Ken Andrews
I've been a fan of Ken Andrews work for a long time and was excited to hear his new album, but was disappointed with his new work. The songs didn't give me the sensation of hairs standing up on the back of my neck. Each song sounded exactly the same. I don't know what's going on but to me he seems to have lost his passion in his song writing. Honestly his new CD is...

I would itemize the songs for quality but I honestly could not find a stinker on the entire album.

If you liked Ken's previous projects, you will love this album in that it is a good blend of them all with a solid dash of new tricks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Platinum Gem By Ken Andrews, June 27, 2007
This review is from: Secrets of the Lost Satellite (Dig) (Audio CD)
One of the finest albums I've ever listened to. Ken Andrews has a true gift for singing, writing, playing both bass and electric guitar, producing, and mixing. Over the last 15 years of his life, he has put out gem after gem, starting with comfort, and this album, is one of his finest achievement. Any music fan in need of inspiration or any musician & artist in need of inspiration, should pick up this album, its very sweet, like a dozen red roses on valentines day. It hits a nerve, and still rocks out!

Ken is the finest solo artist of all time, and this is one of the best albums of all time, and a must have for any true music fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars worth the wait, June 6, 2007

ken andrews, formerly of failure, on year of the rabbit, finally comes out with an album under his own name. It was a long time coming, and definitely worth the wait. I have been a fan of his since magnified first came out, and this is about as good as it gets. Every song is layered, textured, and recorded to perfection. There is not a weak spot on it, although it is a lot more laid back than his previous efforts. I would recommend this album for fans of any of ken's previous works, and for people wanting something for a midnight drive, and for anyone openminded in their music who is sick of all the [..] they play on the radio.

4.0 out of 5 stars solid like wood not charred, March 19, 2007

For me, the journey of listening to Ken's career has been not only about the songwriting, but the production and engineering of the albums. While I think the songwriting peaked with Fantastic Planet, perhaps due to the involvement of Edwards, the sonic landscape of this album is sure not to dissapoint. The songwriting too is very good, not trying to put it down. It's just that it's hard to top Fantastic Planet in my opinion, and this album fails to contend with that rock opera. At the same time, this is a different type of album as it combines elements of his other solo project On, and some of the more pop-oriented moments of Fantastic Planet. Ken does make good pop.. not too sugary. Secrets of the Lost Satellite is more so than not a solid album, but it drags in the middle. Songs run into one another, sounding sorta run-of-the-mill and lacking the innovative song-craft of the aforementioned Fantastic Planet. There are moments of pure genius, but at the same time moments of 'i think it's time to skip to the next song'. The album's highlights include the very melodic and lush opener "Allergic", culminating in the harmony laced layered vocals "we set you up, we set you up and". Also standing out is "23rd boy" and "Write Your Story". However, as with the On records that rested between this outing and Failure I believe the album will grow on you, and me. It took me awhile to really enjoy 'Shifting Skin' and 'Make Believe' (his two releases as On), but now i understand. You begin to hear some of the subtle aspects of each song, and that combined with the masterful production work (although not entirely Ken this time) makes listening a pleasure. I have a feeling the same will happen with this release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Evolution of a Genius, April 22, 2008

After discovering Failure, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

And it was with this album that the angels started to sing.

How fortunate we are, those of us that can hear heaven...

5.0 out of 5 stars Some of Ken Andrews' best work, March 20, 2010
This review is from: Secrets of the Lost Satellite (Dig) (Audio CD)
Like most of his stuff, SOTLS is dreamy, melodic, thematic and eclectic. His style has matured subtly and well. This isn't Saturday Savior or Undone; angst has been usurped by contemplation, and rather than pushing away he is reaching out on this album. However, some of the good old naughtiness is still here, sans bitterness, especially on the very sexy second to last track, 23rd Boy. Rock musicians don't usually age well, but Ken Andrews is at his zenith here, lyrically and musically. The album may not be necessarily conceptual but is lucidly thematic, telling a story with an impressionist narrative. Its a far cry from Failure, but a powerful one still, one that reaches back to its roots buried in some more hostile past; less raw, more bare, heavier fans might write it off as sappy pop, but pop is a medium Ken Andrews dabbles in with the skilled hand of a seasoned artist. As with Fantastic Planet, I've listened to this album over and over for days straight. Ken Andrews kicks ass. Get it, you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such an underrated artist, March 28, 2009

It's so hard to express how amazing of an artist Ken Andrews is, and it's also such a shame that he isn't as known as he should be. If there was more stuff like this and Failure on the radio instead of the crap that is, it would be a very beautiful world, haha!

I first learned of Ken Andrews when I found out Failure was a major source of inspiration for Blink-182's untitled fifth album, which is personally one of my all time favorite records (if you don't like Blink, your entitled to your opinion, read on) and also found out he actually helped out a lot with the album. I checked out Failure, was blown away, bought Magnified and I have since bought Fantastic Planet, On, Year of the Rabbit, and this. All of which I have been completely moved by in one way or another.

This record I personally think is just beautiful and is probably my favorite work from Ken Andrews since Failure. I honestly think it's too hard to express why I love this album so much. If you are a fan of Failure, you will love this, if you have no idea who Failure or Ken Andrews is, then treat yourself, check out his myspace page and buy this album and a Failure album. Real music is still out there, you just have to search for it. Really hope Ken makes another solo album, could use more albums like this in my collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise From Pandora Radio, December 23, 2008

Never would've found this album if it wasn't for when Pandora.com flipped on the song "secret things" based on my song seeds and musical group suggestions. There isn't nearly as many low points on this album as there are on most you'll find; and to me that's a definite highlight as an album worth buying instead of downloading individual songs. Solid 4.5 stars. -5 stars for the solo effort.

I've never been a big fan of the band Failure but Secrets of the Lost Satellite will make me give everything Ken Andrews has been involved in another fighting chance.

The best tracks here are 3, 4, 7, 9, 10 and 11.

Intriguing. Alien. Different. Original.

This is a great album to put on while cruising through the starscape at 2:00am. Unfortunately, how often are people doing that?

One thing I like about Ken Andrews is he doesn't feel the need to be outrageous in order to be interesting. There is hardly a "swear" word in his catalog. SECRETS does have the F-word in one song, but it genuinely belongs there, and the way Andrews slurs it, it seems he felt mildly uncomfortable with it, and yet he pulled it off perfectly. Ken Andrews has class. There is grandeur and sophistication in this disc, not rock-star ego.

It took me a while to fully turn on to it, but SECRETS is right up there with YEAR OF THE RABBIT and FANTASTIC PLANET. Buy it.
