5.0 out of 5 stars Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls
I loved the book. One of those stories that you just can't seem to put down. This is a journey into the life of Mary Magdalene and Jesus. The historical evidence reveals the "hidden" truth about her life as a great Master and Healer. The story line keeps a fast pace and I couldn't wait to turn the next page. I would highly recommend this book.

I was in the mood for a religious mystery and found this on Amazon. The description was exactly what I was looking for and I was excited to get it in my hands. After checking a couple of local bookstores, I ended up buying it from Amazon and started to read it that night. I have never been so let down by a book in my life!

5.0 out of 5 stars How Refreshing!, March 19, 2005
How refreshing to see the story of Mary Magdalene told where she is treated with respect, intelligence and such a lofty perspective! Impeccable research is woven into an engaging story that twists and turns, weaving the past with the present, making a delightful, yet thoughtful, read. I kept turning the pages waiting to see what would happen next! And when I finished the book, it left me asking a lot of questions about the grossly maligned historical presentation of such an incredible and marvelous woman. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls, March 24, 2005
I just finished this book over the weekend, and I would like to say how much I enjoyed it. I have not read a book yet that has woven so wonderfully so many different and varied truths throughout its pages. I am greatly impressed and think the author did a fine, fine job getting a whole lot of truth out there for Mr. and Mrs. John Doe to read, and for all of us to read.

I loved the ending of the last scroll. Beautiful. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-Researched, Fascinating Facts, March 21, 2005
By
Although the storyline is fiction, the well-researched facts that the storyline is wrapped around enrich my mind and inspire poignant contemplations. My own research coincides with the gems of historical facts found in this book -- the Black Madonnas of Europe remember Mary Magdalene, Jesus' wife, as a black woman; the lies of the Church... the storyline is a wonderful platform for the courageous presentation of much factual information. I enjoy knowledge intermingled with a great story -- entertainment with very meaningful content. This is not empty-headed drama. I recommend this book as an experience!

5.0 out of 5 stars Noble heart and brilliant mind ..., March 26, 2005
We have often seen the Black Madonna with a baby in her arms. Could the baby be Sara, Jesus's daughter, instead of being Jesus?

As a little girl growing up in the church, I had always had this secret love and admiration for Mary Magdalene even though my mom thought differently about her ... I would get mad with my mom and knowing deep inside my heart that she was the real goddess, and I would like to become her when I grew up instead of becoming an ordinary woman like ...

Bettye Johnson's "Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls" brings great insights into the hearts of truth seekers. This book is weaved with sincere research by a noble mind. I have to get more copies just for my mom, and for the goddesses in all forms. That acutally include you and I. For She Who Sees All is with us all, in all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls, May 3, 2006
By
This review is from: Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls (Paperback)
The author uses two adventurous American women traveling in Southern France to draw the reader into this tale of suspense and intrigue. The book is fiction, but it is based on seven years of research and reads like a true account of history.

The women stumble upon big jars in a hidden cave. In them, they find scrolls written in Greek. Not wanting the scrolls to be kept from the public the way other antiquities had, the women set out to have the scrolls translated before they do anything else.

Through an American businessman who had traveled with them in Spain, they find a dissolutioned French priest who agrees to do the translating in secret. What they discover is that the scrolls were written in Mary Magdalene's own hand. It is the true account of her life, which unfolds before their eyes as each chapter is translated.

Unfortunately, their discovery was itself discovered by more than one group determined to have the scrolls at any price, including murder.

Their very lives at stake, the intrepid four face one frightening challenge after another as they attempt to finish the translating and, at the same time, save the scrolls from falling into dark hands.

I was left with true admiration for the brave women in this story and a new appreciation for Mary Magdalene. Her bravery, her devotion to Jesus and the life she lived in times where women were even more discriminated against than they are today were all remarkable.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls (Paperback)
I was in the mood for a religious mystery and found this on Amazon. The description was exactly what I was looking for and I was excited to get it in my hands. After checking a couple of local bookstores, I ended up buying it from Amazon and started to read it that night. I have never been so let down by a book in my life!

It was like reading someone's extremely boring diary. The writing was elementary and the characters were so thin and undeveloped that I couldn't convince myself I was reading a story. Ugh! Not to mention the regular jabs at the Catholic church (I'm a non-Catholic by the way) which were extremely annoying. It was as if the author was just making a point of randomly throwing in her opinions of the history and power of the church. And on top of that, she has a cheesy, unbelievable pseudo-priest who agrees with every word and his response is always a variation of "Oui, you are right" and then expands on the thought at hand. It was sickening. I finally had to give up on it immediately after reading the pathetic, disgusting "love scene" that made me queasy.

5.0 out of 5 stars THEREIN LIES MUCH TO CONTEMPLATE, July 11, 2008
By
This review is from: Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls (Paperback)
A woman on a hike in the French Pyrenees falls into an underground cave and makes an astounding discovery, unbeknownst to her at the time. Hidden inside pottery jars are 23 scrolls that have been written by Mary Magdalene. Therein begins this fast paced adventure as the woman and her 3 friends work feverishly to translate them from their ancient Greek; their work further heightened by the fact that they have no choice but to protect the scrolls from those who are conspiring against them.

In revealing the words of MM, they must grapple with the fact that this new knowledge will rock the very foundation of modern religion(s). Throughout the translating of the ancient scrolls, each character is also experiencing their own spiritual transformation, thereby leading to remarkable healing. The book, thusly, alternates between the stories that are written in the scrolls and the modern day story focusing on these four people. The combination of indepth research, knowledge and imagination, in keeping with both history and alternative possibilities, makes this book a fascinating read.

The fact that there are tidbits of historical information included throughout the story is what makes it more plausible. One will discover through the reading of the Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls that Jeshua (Jesus) and MM are married and have children. In addition, Jesus has been born into a family of brothers. Other biblical figures are discussed in the scrolls, making them appear human and fallible. The reading of the book incites one to wonder if there are, indeed, scrolls still hidden, out there, waiting to be discovered. The flip side equates to wondering how many have actually been discovered, yet kept silent by the Church.

This book is a must for those who enjoy researching alternative histories of Christianity and should, therefore, ignite curiosity in its readers to question some of the commonly held assumptions of modern religious thought, delving head first into the realm of possiblilities.

I now leave you with words from Mary Magdalene, herself, as taken from pages 304 to 305.

As my status and presence have been suppressed, so has the true status of women been hidden away. I see a new dawn. When my writings are found, it will be a sign of change for women and they will be revered as the wombs of creation. Woman and man will walk side by side, each gifted with minds equal but reflecting the varied aspect of the One. What is my message? Foremost I say that Yeshua's message was Love and Truth. The old ways must be done away with. Over and over he spoke the message: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, all your mind and life. Next is to love other beings as you would love yourself. My message, together with Yeshua's is Mind.

And what is Mind? Mind is the total of all thoughts, feelings and emotions. Yeshua and I were like two hands. One had was love and the other mind. When clasped together they became the One. The Truth is available to all. It is for those who have the eyes to see and the ears to hear. My life has been for the purpose to awaken the Divine that sleeps deep within each person from one lifetime to another.

My teachings have been consistent. By healing the thoughts, the body will be healed. Change is necessary and created by what one thinks and believes. All learned people can espouse great knowledge. Uness they turn it into experience, it is empty of meaning.

Ms. Johnson deserves to be commended for having written a truly awesome book.
