3.0 out of 5 stars Not the Best Book for Slots
This is a good book about slots but it is not one of the best. The author does not delve into the topic to any sufficient degree. I much preferred Growhowski's "Slot Answer Book" and I really loved Scoblette's "Break the One Arm Bandits."

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughts on Modern Slot Playing, May 13, 2000
An unusual book on the subject of gambling in that it is at the same
time instructive, easy -- even fun -- to read, and gives the reader a
much better understanding of how to play the slots than he had
before. The casual gambler actually understands little of the game; if
he learns things of value -- such as the best locations on the floor
to find a "loose" machine -- he obviously is in for a better
evening at the slots than otherwise. Larry Mak's fine little book does
just that: shares with the reader the author's long experience in the
casinos and his exceptional insight into the mysteries of slots.
There are definitely things to know about casinos that will assist the
average player in improving his experience there. This book gives him
that edge. Well worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have book for any casino patron!, July 13, 2001
By A Customer
I just took an hour or so and read the Secrets of Modern Slot Playing by Larry Mak. I found it very informative and I believe that it will be helpful during my next trip to Vegas. I have read several other books on slot playing over the years, i.e., Slot Machine Mania and Break the One Arm Bandits. It is nice that Larry Mak has issued a 2001 edition because the information in these previous books has become somewhat outdated due to the fact that technology changes so quickly. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to further their enjoyment playing slots and those who are interested in learning a few valuable secretes to help increase their chances of winning!

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR ANYONE WHO SETS FOOT IN A CASINO, November 15, 2002
By A Customer
I can't believe I have played all these years without knowing the information contained in this book. There is no magic here, but there are strategies that casinos use in placing loose slots amongst tighter slots. Knowing where these slots are may increase your winnings. There is other helpful knowledge here such as avoiding progressives and common sense ways to get a grip on how to curtail your losses (which involves controlling yourself basically). But how many of us really take a minute to set up a plan how much we are going to let ourselves play with? Like I said, its not magic, but a lot of common sense tips to use to make sure you are playing with your head and not your emotions....

5.0 out of 5 stars Secrets of Modern Slot Playing, February 25, 2002

Excellent book! Step-by-step plans for playing slots quarters to dollars are easy to follow. Humorous stories entailed in book really give you a perspective on how others play slots. Anyone who wants to prolong their sessions from losing to at least break even should consider this book. Author does not "pontificate" on perils of slot playing...assumes adults should know perils of slot playing. Author dispels quite a few myths on slot playing and gets to the bones of how to actually, conciously play. Also lists the various states/casinos with payouts per slot average.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good!, February 2, 2004
This review is from: Secrets of Modern Slot Playing (Paperback)
Anyone who has ever entered a casino will find this book a terrific resource. The author explains in layman terms how a slot machine works, dispelling myths. Fate is your best friend when you play a slot machine because there is nothing except mathematical probability when you hit the spin button. Luck has nothing to do with winning or losing at a slot machine, you just have to be in the right place at the right time.

An enjoyable read with many humorous anecdotes that many of us will be able to relate to. Highly informative: in providing payout tables of various machines that are seen in many casinos today. There is also a state listing by casino that shows how each casino pays by denomination of slot machine. It not only teaches, but also provides detailed tips to improve the player's chances of winning when playing slot machines.

This reviewer recently went to a casino and tried some of the hints from the book. Although I did not come out a winner, I limited my losses to $40.00 for 4 hours of playing time. Pretty good!! I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it for anyone who will be visiting a casino in the near future. For those who gamble and those who do not but are curious and want to learn. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book on modern slot machines., July 3, 2006
I jet got this book today (July 3, 2006) and read it through in one day as well. Regardless of the size of the book, it was filled with good and useful information in regards to how slots works, the dispelling of common myths, and how to modify you style of play to prolong your enjoyment in the casino.

A fascinating feature of the book is a list of known casinos in the U.S. and their average payback based on location and denomination of the machine. This was information I have never seen before and helped me determine which of the casinos near me have the better paying slots.

It was also nice to see that they weren't trying to "sell a system." The book explains that the slot machines are nothing more than computer-based random number generators and that there is nothing you can do that will alter their play or cause them to pay out better. It does suggest how to alter your method of play to prolong your playing time, if not improve your chances of winning.

While Book Mama complained that the methods described in the book didn't work in an Indian casino, the book does explain that some Indian casinos have lower payout rates than most other casinos.

My only problem with the book is that, while it did discuss tax rules in regards to your winnings, I wished it had given more detailed information than what it did. Still, it's a pretty good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is GREAT!, April 25, 2005
This review is from: Secrets of Modern Slot Playing (Paperback)
Seriously, if you play slots, read this book. Of course luck adds to everything, but I read this book and followed what it said and I won and came out ahead (won $800 on the slots, and after playing other games, went home $500 ahead). This book gives the slot player so much more of an advantage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the Best? Maybe. One of the Best? Definitely!, July 3, 2001
By A Customer
The reviewer from Sedona makes an invalid comparison of Larry Mak's book with two others. Secrets of Modern Slot Playing is a how-to book. As such, it provides only the essential information the average slot player really needs to know. A how-to book by its nature does not go into the elaborate detail the Sedona reviewer finds missing. Also, the Sedona reviewer's phrase "not one of the best books" is not strictly correct from a logical point of view. Technically, there can be only one "best book," although we use the phrase "one of the best" in everyday speech. But what is the point of ranking three good books of different sorts? That is such a subjective exercise. Secrets of Modern Slot Playing is a handy guidebook that provides tips to make anyone's visit to a casino more enjoyable and rewarding.
