About the Author

Susan K. Behm, author of Civilized Savages, is the outspoken voice for those who are unable to speak for themselves. As an abuse survivor, she understands better than the average individual the importance of raising awareness of the effects of abuse on an individual. She bravely speaks out against the most extreme forms of child labor and ritual abuse. In her novels, she illustrates that abuse of every type is going on not only around the world, but in our own country as well. No child is safe while this threat exists.

More About the Author

Susan Kaye Behm was born and raised in the mid-west and is the older of two children. Writing has been a great love of her life. She has always enjoyed writing and has found it a meaningful way of expressing her thoughts and feelings. There's nothing that sends her spirit soaring like looking at the beauty of God's sunset and using the power of language to express that scene. She uses this power for everything from lifting her spirits when she is feeling down to describing a vacation in such vivid detail that the reader feels as though they have come along on the trip.

Ms. Behm graduated from Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga, Tennessee, as an Education major. She worked at the school to pay for her education and learned the valuable lesson of an education that one has had to work for.

After graduation, Ms. Behm moved to the Washington, D.C. area, and is currently working for a long-term care facility as an Information Technology Coordinator. She uses her education training to assist staff members in learning how to better use the technology at hand to enable the staff to better serve their community.

In her free time, Ms. Behm spends her time caring for two exuberant black labs named Cal Ripken and Sammy Sosa. In addition, she is actively involved as a volunteer at her church and is an avid teddy bear collector

5.0 out of 5 stars Edge of your seat review, November 10, 2004
This review is from: Secrets in Paradise (Paperback)
Debbi Gyl, finishing her teaching requirements during the summer session, finds herself at a disadvantage in job hunting, since most schools had already hired their teachers for the fall semester. So when the town of Paradise offers her not just a job, but to pay her expenses to move there and rent her an apartment, she decides not to look a gift horse in the mouth and accepts the job. But as soon as she reports to school for her first day, she is filled with a sense of foreboding. The school resembled a mental hospital more than a school with the windows painted over so that no one could look in or out and the inside was gray concrete block and the students moved quietly through the hallways, with none of the usual laughter and talk you would expect from high school students. When she meets with the principal, she is told that she will teach in the mornings and be the guidance counselor in the afternoon and when she objects is told that it will not be a problem, she will just be advising them on their future careers anyway. And the more she learns about the school, the students and her fellow teachers, the more she becomes convinced that there is something very wrong in Paradise. And then one day, she gets into her car and there is a mysterious man in the backseat who tells her that she must uncover the secret of Paradise and get proof for him to take to the authorities. She says no and tries to leave town, only to find every road out of town blocked for some reason or another and realizes that the only way to leave is to expose the town's secret, but she is totally unprepared for the shocking secret the whole town in covering up and more than willing to kill for. Behm has written a taut, well-written thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to nail-bitting finish.
