Fitzpatrick is a genius, but,
By Raspberry G. "Aspiring shepherdess" (Louisville, KY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Secrets of Planning & Designing a Hand-Hooked Rug (Paperback)
I enjoyed reading this book, it is full of good information about how to be creative as a rug design artist. If I had a criticism, it would be that Fitzpatrick keeps too many secrets to herself. She expects the reader to figure out a lot of the technique by looking at the photos. As a person who likes to have lots of information at hand, I was left needing more. But the book is full of beautiful photos of Fitzpatrick's designs. She is one of the more non-traditional rug hookers, and I truly enjoy her style. I just wish she was better at describing it. But don't let this keep you from buying the book. I recommend it in spite of this teeny criticism. You'll get many good hours of reading and design tips.

Misleading title,
This review is from: Secrets of Planning & Designing a Hand-Hooked Rug (Paperback)
I feel this book is only suitable for a small segment of the rug hooking community. It's ideas are primarily for landscapes and people to be hooked in a primitive style. I found there to be way to much personal stories about the author and her town and what gave her inspiration. I am also not fond of her style of hooking since everythings looks bumpy and edges are rough. If you like these attributes in your rug hooking, then you will enjoy this book.

Deanne Fitzpatrick invites each reader to trust in their creative ability and use it in designing rugs. The book is an inspirational, as well as a practical, guide to planning and designing rugs.

I would not have bought this book in I had been able to learn more about it before buying it. The book was about designing rugs, but I was looking for information about finishing them, such as how to make corners that are not lumpy. It was a nice book, but useless to me. Potential buyers need to be able to look inside books, and I will not buy another book unless I can see the table of contents.
