Book Description

"This book actually made me cry at the end and that is unusual for a non-fiction book. It just gave me the validation as a writer that I've never had before. Seldom do I run across other writers in person and so reading Mark's book really was a confidence booster. I recommend this book to all writers especially those who are new. It's the added boost we all need to see our little "babies" rise from the literary crib to adulthood."

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for Beginning Writers April 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
While I already knew most of the points in this book, it's still a good read for self-published writers. It is especially good for writers just starting off as it dispels some myths about self-publishing.

If there are two things to learn from this books, they are:
1.) Write the best book you can
2.) Self-publish on as many platforms as possible

5.0 out of 5 stars A one-stop shop! September 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After attending Mark's workshop at the RWA National Convention, I decided to read this book and learn even more about E-Book Publishing. I'm really glad I did, because I've picked up on some great suggestions to make things a whole lot easier. Let's face it, for many of us there's so much to learn that it's overwhelming. For an author who's been in the game for a while, it's a good way to reinforce already learned secrets. But for the newbie writer, this book is a one-stop shop!
An important point Mr. Coker made time and time again - so I want to reiterate - selling e-books won't happen overnight. It's takes time to build your career. But on the virtual bookshelves today, we really do have the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Right on target June 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is well-written advice for the novice and seasoned writer. I appreciated the charts that described the book selling cycles and how they can work for the author. As a result, it changed how I view pulling my books off the market!

The future of self publishing authors is a bright one. This book helped me to see that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn E-book Publishing Success from a Master May 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a gem of a book for the price (free on Smashwords). It's a good read for aspiring authors who are just starting to self-publish and need some guidance getting started in the seemingly chaotic, unorganized, and ever-expanding galaxy of the self-publishing industry. As founder of Smashwords.com, Mark Coker leans heavily on Smashwords' self-publishing platform to help the reader understand what it takes to publish and distribute an e-book(s) successfully. The book complements his other free companion pieces, the "Smashwords Book Marketing Guide" and "Smashwords Style Guide." The three books together are great primers for using Smashwords and leveraging it as a distribution and marketing tool.

Coker's book offers 28 secrets to publishing a successful e-book. Some "secrets" are common sense, and the book doesn't go into great deal on how to take advantage of them. The biggest "secret" to success is to write a great book that resonates with readers, but Coker doesn't explain how to do it. That's up to you. He does, however, generally point writers in the right direction, getting them to think about the different elements of self-publishing success. For example, he suggests writers think beyond the price to generate sales. Should a book be priced at $0.99 or $9.99? It depends on the writer's objective. Price is just one aspect of book sales an author should consider.

Coker does not offer as many specifics in this book as he did in his marketing and style guides, but I appreciate the holistic view of self-publishing he offers. Experienced self-published authors may have a few "duh" moments when something strikes them as common sense. Nevertheless, it's worthwhile for any writer to read this book and learn from one of the masters of the self-publishing industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful July 14, 2012
By Jenny

Of Mr. Coker's three "How to ebook" ebooks, I think this one was the most informative to me. It opened my eyes to the online publishing world complete with new terms and descriptions. I am much better prepared to enter the world of online publishing then I was before reading this book. Thank you Mr. Coker for making this available for free to a newbie like me.

Mr. Coker gives some good advice but rattles on too much about his own product. But, hey, it's for free.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good place to start June 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a solid, friendly overview of a subject that is becoming increasingly need-to-know in today's publishing environment. Smashwords wunderkind Mark Coker offers several dozens "secrets" to success, all of which are important foundational knowledge on the topic. Most authors with any experience in e-book publishing will already be familiar with most of his points, but they're still good for a reminder. And if you're just starting out, this is an excellent place to begin.

More About the Author

I'm co-author with my wife of Boob Tube, a novel that explores the wild and wacky world of daytime television soap operas. Lesleyann is a former reporter for Soap Opera Weekly magazine. As research for the novel, we moved to Burbank for two months and interviewed about 50 soap opera industry insiders, including actors, writers, hair & makeup professionals, fan club managers, and publicists. We collected hundreds of pages of over the top stories. Next, we moved to a cabin in woods of Vermont and wrote our novel.

Despite representation from an excellent literary agent at one of the top firms in NY, publishers refused to publish the book because previous soap opera themed novels had not performed well in the marketplace.

This lead me to start Smashwords in 2008, which is now the world's largest distributor of self-published ebooks. We represent most of the world's bestselling ebook authors, including many NY Times and USA Today bestsellers.

Since founding Smashwords, most of my writing has been about the topic of ebook publishing best practices. I've written three books which have now collectively garned nearly 1/2 million downloads:

1. The Smashwords Style Guide (how to format, produce and publish an ebook)

2. The Smashwords Book Marketing Guide (how to market any book for free)

3. The Secrets to Ebook Publishing Success (the best practices secrets of the bestselling ebook authors)

In a prior life, I ran an award-winning Silicon Valley PR agency for nearly 20 years focused on venture-backed startups. Drawing on that experience, I wrote The 10-Minute PR Checklist which teaches entrepreneurs and marketing folks how leverage the power of honest PR to achieve any business objective.

You can find all my books here on Amazon as well as at other major retailers.

When I'm not writing or working on Smashwords, I enjoy gardening, traveling and hiking tall mountains, the tallest of which has been Mt. Kilimanjaro.
