This book definitely kept me wondering and guessing. As a reader, I was kept in the dark for most of the book, only allowed bits and pieces of the puzzle until the very end. It was both awesome and frustrating.

Bonnie brought out such conflicting emotions in me. I just had to feel compassion and sorrow for her horrible, ugly childhood but the adult Bonnie that was full of lies and that hurt people really bothered me. I didn't like her at all. At first I almost felt guilty for not liking her but as the story progressed and I knew more and understood better, I changed my mind about my feelings and Bonnie.

Secrets are destructive things and Bonnie keeps a whole box full. I never would have guessed the ending in the beginning. I loved how the story slowly unfolded and turned into something I wasn't expecting. It really was well crafted.

I loved the setting too. The 1940's. There is this one scene where Bonnie gets dressed in a halter top dress that ties behind her neck and I had such a vivid, clear picture of the whole scene in my head. It was awesome. I love when that happens.

The ending wasn't my absolute favorite. I really wanted more closure than what I got. I wanted to know what happened between Bonnie and the other characters. I can't really tell you what I wanted without giving the story and ending away and I just cannot do that. This is a story to be experienced for your yourself. The more I read this book, the more I enjoyed it.

Content: Some mild swearing and some scenes of abuse & child abuse.

This book is tagged as historical fiction but I must say it didn't feel like it. The writing style seemed fresh and you were able to connect with each of it's characters in a comfortable manner.

I did think Bonnie came across as selfish and (very) shallow. But as the story progresses, you'll realise it was necessary to paint her in this light because only then will the ending knock the wind out of you.

*cheeky grin* Yes, this is one of those books that will have you thinking, now why didn't I see that coming?

Love seemed to be the central theme of the book with World War 2 used as a background and a 'tool' to add more colour to each character. All in, I loved the flow and the build-up Vickie gave each character.

Would I recommend this read? Oh yes, definitely.

Overall assessment:
Content: 4.5/5
Editing: 4.5/5
Formatting: 4.5/5
Pacing: 4.5/5
Offensive content?: Somewhere between PG and PG13

I really did enjoy reading this novel. Unlike some other historical fiction I've read, I found that the "historical" parts flowed naturally with the plot and didn't feel like a half novel, half history book. It was fun being back in this time period. Likewise, the writing was fluid and easy to follow. I was drawn into the plot from the first page. I liked Bonnie right away and was rooting for her to get away from . . . that's the big question, and to start a new life even though I didn't know what she was running from. I was very curious as to what was in the box and what she was doing for a living while in San Diego that was giving her such a lucrative income.

I found all of the sub characters fascinating and saw them very vividly as well.

I also appreciated how flawed Bonnie character was. As it turned out, her behavior was truly contemptible. I like that the author didn't build this pending scandal and then back off to play it safe. So many writers do that and it's a let down when I--as the reader--think there's something serious going on and then find out that the "scandal" turns out to be no big deal.

Great writing, great story, an author to watch.

I loved how this book was set in the 1940's during WWII. The historical feel of the book was realistic and the writing was crisp. Main character Bonnie is closed, and hard to like at first. Soon into the book you find out why she stays guarded and unattached from others. She had a cruel beginning in life with a father that abused her and her mother. The mystery begins as we meet Bonnie, and you soon want to know all of secrets that she is harboring. Romance finally comes to her when she meets Glen. As she tries to move forward in life her lies soon catch up with her. Bonnie's happily ever after could be ruined by what secrets are hidden in the red box. The ending is so surprising that you might not see it coming. This compelling read will keep you captive until Bonnie's secrets are revealed.

3 out of 5 stars. I did enjoy reading Secrets of the Red Box. There were times, however, when I thought it was a little slow. I thought there were some things that didn't need to be in there. It is a clean read, which I appreciated, and the author did a great job of developing characters. I really liked the ending, and thought it was perfect for what the secrets were in the red box.
