5.0 out of 5 stars Unconventional but educational
Unlike most instructional videos (dvd) which have a static camera trained on an instructor giving step by step details, this one offers a different approach. 5.0 out of 5 stars Unconventional but educational, November 24, 2003
This review is from: Secrets of the Rose Gardener - The Art of Rose Gardening (DVD)
Unlike most instructional videos (dvd) which have a static camera trained on an instructor giving step by step details, this one offers a different approach. The cameras follow Ellen Minet, rosarian for the rose garden at Long Island's Coe Estate, and her volunteer assistants as they tend the 700+ roses through all four seasons. As they plant, fertilize, water, spray, prune and deadhead the roses, they offer practical advice for the viewer. The garden's collection includes all types of roses (hybrid tea, shrub, old roses, climbers and ramblers) and she explains the different techniques that each rose requires. The photography is exceptional (beautiful tight close-ups) and this is an excellent course for the beginning rose gardener. The dvd also includes a segment on how to sharpen pruners, a photo gallery of interior shots of the Coe mansion, a rose gallery slide show and descriptive text of various rose growing techniques.

5.0 out of 5 stars Secrets of the Rose Gardener, September 23, 2003

I found this 70 minute DVD to be very informative and thought provoking.
An ideal medium for showing at rose society and garden club meetings to stimulate discussion and to pass along timely information on how to care for various types of roses.
The photography was close-up and easy to understand what was being said about the various types of rose plants. The color was excellent and the photography of a year in the rose garden showed very clearly the various needs roses have throughout the growing season.
The musical background was delightfully peaceful and inviting.
This would make an excellent gift for anyone growing roses.

This DVD is both beautiful and informative. Pruning techniques are clearly explained and shown in close-up detail, which is very helpful, and the "Beauty of the Roses" segment is great viewing for any gardener. My only complaint is that two subjects I had hoped to see covered (transplanting and soil amendment for established plants) were not addressed. Overall, I love this DVD and would especially recommend it for new rose growers because it helps disprove the myth that roses are demanding divas.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of Audrey Hepburn, February 15, 2008
This review is from: Secrets of the Rose Gardener - The Art of Rose Gardening (DVD)
This video is an absolute treasure for anyone who loves Audrey and the amazing life that she lead, and also gardens! She is like a million fragrant roses as she walks her humble self through these incredible places. I think it's the best motion picture she ever made, just being herself with us in her favorite places. Buy it and cherish it and share it forever!
