Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Veteran magazine writer and editor Dutton (Redbook's 500 Sex Tips) gives the home practitioner plenty to think about in this up-to-the-minute survey of the science of sex. Relying heavily on academic studies, Dutton fills readers in on why red revs a man's engine, how the scent of cucumbers and Good N Plenty candy will draw in women, and what it is the bad boys do so well. She also tackles the age-old questions of closing-time attractiveness and the (in-) efficacy of pickup lines. Readers who've already attracted a mate will also find plenty of germane explanations, as well as more than a few techniques to heat up the bedroom, including specific instructions for improving orgasms and sharing fantasies. Whether readers have questions about Spanish fly, how to find out if your spouse is cheating, or the proper term for a getting-kicked-in-the-groin fetish ("tamakeri"), Dutton covers it all with a nonjudgmental tone and snappy, magazine-style prose. Though dense, the book is also a funny and addictive read, worthwhile for bedroom tips as well as sophisticated parlor trivia. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Review

“Dutton seamlessly blends her writing gift with the eyes of scientific research to give the common folk access to the best new, tried and true information about our sexuality and some you wouldn’t have dreamed of. . . . Her book is a delicious guided tour through the ever-changing and evolving landscape of human sexuality.”
—Lou Paget, bestselling author of How to Be a Great Lover and How to Give Her Absolute Pleasure

Very interesting book with a lot of helpful tips on how to improve sexual satisfactions. However, you could tell this was written by an author who writes for popular magazines. Although she does her best in incoorporating the latest in science, she clearly misunderstands some of the research and overstates the results. She writes a lot about "proving" and "confirming" when the studies are actually correlational. In short, it's a very interesting and informative read, but the interpretations are bastly overstated.

I thourghly enjoyed this book. It was well written and offered some insight into lovemaking and attraction from a more scientific standpoint. I liked the fact that there were multiple studies to support theories and ideas rather than just one point of view. I would reccomend this book to anyone interested in learning a few things about what really happens to you when you're attracted to someone, and beyond. Again Great read!

I received this book as a gift and wasn't particularly eager to read it, but I dipped into it and was quickly captivated--especially when I read, for instance, about the studies that have shown that people who have more, and more satisfying, sex live longer! The wide array of fascinating scientific findings are relayed in an engaging, lively style. Yet the book is neither drearily detailed nor annoyingly glib. Most surprising of all to this skeptic, it has already improved my own sex life--so apparently I'll live longer. Who can ask for more from a book?

This book was so much fun to read!!! A vaccine against cheating? Pumpkin pie as an erotic scent? This book does an amazing job of digging up all the wacky stuff about sex that scientists have uncovered. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for an entertaining look at the world of sex!
