5.0 out of 5 stars Psychology without the Psycho-babble
This book was written by a clinical psychologist. However, unlike many other books of this type, there is no pop-psychology jargon or grating "feel the love -let's sing Kumbaya" tone either. I got the feeling reading this that it was originally a textbook for an undergrad college class-no bad thing, the author clearly has taught this subject before and...

Body language & non-verbal communication fascinate me, so I figured to love this book - Besides, from reading its title, I expected this book to be one up on secret sex stuff so how could I go wrong.

Unfortunately, no such information exists in this book - For what it's worth, the author's presentation is totally devoid of detail or information - On a scale of 1-100 rating subject content, this book is worth a 5 - Next to nothing on page after page after page.

For example, the author writes one statement about how someone's automobile is an extension of his body and therefore an important indicator of self image - Great, but that is the sum entirety of the author's comments in that area - No specifics, examples, analysis, nothing - Just knowing cars are important is good enough I guess - The whole book is that way.

The idea of an authoritative book relating body language to sexual content and non-verbal communication is a great idea - If the author knows anything of such matters, he should write one.

This book was written by a clinical psychologist. However, unlike many other books of this type, there is no pop-psychology jargon or grating "feel the love -let's sing Kumbaya" tone either. I got the feeling reading this that it was originally a textbook for an undergrad college class-no bad thing, the author clearly has taught this subject before and knows how to communicate it. This is NOT about manipulating people or making someone become attracted to you who otherwise would not. Instead, it's more of a decoder-ring intrepretation of visual cues people make when looking at someone whom they find attractive (or not). You really can observe the behaviors the author discusses in any social situation; it really does work. Be warned though, that the blurb in the Amazon writeup is a little misleading; the book does not laundrylist gestures and meanings it's simply not laid out that way. Worth getting if you're single, or simply interested in people watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars sexy, informative, funny, witty, entertaining and worthwhile, May 17, 1999

this excellent book is thoughtful and insightful. the author is a psychologist who obviously values sound research over pseudo psychobabble. there are numerous practical examples of everyday encounters between men and women and the ways in which people can learn to communicate more effectively. the book is sexy witty and makes a refreshing change to most of the contemporary sex books available on the market.

4.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly useful... except for 1 outright contradiction., January 18, 2007
I'll go ahead and get the 1 bad thing out of the way, and then go ahead and review all the other wonderful aspects of this highly recommended book:

On page 56 - referring to handshakes - the bold text reads:

"Unconsciously we reveal our desire to dominate by placing our thumb on top [during the handshake]."

On page 57, in the body of the text, the reader will surely be confused when he reads:

"People less concerned with power tend to offer a hand in which the thumb is on top and may have less need of domination."

I would assume that the person who puts his thumb on top is more concerned with domination, but that is just my intuition, and since the book provides the reader with an outright contradiction, the reader will need to rely on intuition for this part. Perhaps if the author is reading this, they can go ahead and edit the book before its next publishing.

Now that we have that out of the way...

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and found it extremely helpful. I went to a party recently and was amazed at how many different signals were being sent out from person to person during conversations that neither party was aware of. I didn't go interview any of these people to check my validity per se, but the people I had originally brought along with me to the party confirmed with me their interest (or disinterest, as it were), which I had witnessed before they said anything about it simply by reading their bodies.

This book has many colored photos showing what you should be looking for, fortunately of very attractive people. I really enjoyed that the photos showed without apparent exaggeration what exactly one should see. The book also goes on to mention that oftentimes, more than one sign is being demonstrated, and sometimes of both positive and negative causes, leaving the person sending mixed messages. The book gives an obvious remedy, as well as a strategy to better understand the person throughout interactions.

My only problem now is remembering all of the different signs the book talks about, and then remembering to look for them while talking to people, while at the same time listening to what they are saying. I suppose that this isn't the book's fault, but it goes to show how much valuable information it contains.

If the reader intently reads this book and then goes out and watches people interact, they will be unable NOT to see signs of positive or negative feelings, both sexual or general.

Although this book does contradict itself, I still highly recommend it to anyone interested in the subject. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on body language, May 19, 2002
This review is from: Secrets of Sexual Body Language (Paperback)
Some books I just read and some books I read with a highlighter underlining as I go then making notes in the margins. Flipping through this book, I found that I had heavely highlighted it, the detail is that rich. While the illustrations were not that informative the content is. And it's not a sexual technique manual, it's more on methods of flirting and how to detect it. I recommend it.

This is a must read for the naive and unexperienced heterosexual male. If used correctly, the contents of this book can help anyone dodge what I call "social selection." Do yourself and every possible conquest a favor by reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reading Body Language Taught Easily!, March 5, 2011
"Secrets of Sexual Body Language" is an easy-to-read book that isn't filled with psychological terms or hard-to-understand terms either. The book is 160 pages long, and it took me a little over an hour to read the entire book. The book is softcover and includes a lot of different pictures that illustrate the concepts that the author writes about.

The book is actually really useful. I enjoyed it a lot for that reason. Now that I've finished reading it, I actually notice myself paying attention to other's body language a whole lot more than I used to pay attention to it. I wouldn't say that the book made me have a better chance with picking up men or anything, but it does give you the tools to learn how to tell if a woman/man is interested. It teaches you how to read body language so you can actively press harder or pull back if your flirtation is making her/him uncomfortable. It teaches you things to look for to know if a woman/man is attracted to you as well, so you know how well your flirtation is going or if it's worth taking it somewhere else.

The interesting thing about this book is the fact that it's not just for flirting and sexual reasons. The stuff in this book can easily be applied to work or social settings as well. People tend to do a lot of same things when they're uncomfortable or relaxed in your presense as they would when you're trying to pick someone up. Not only do you learn how to read people flirtaciously, but you also learn how to tell when someone at work is okay with you or uncomfortable with you.

Overall, while it's not the most detailed book on the planet, it also does present all of this information in an easy-to-understand method without all the mumble-jumble that can make other psychological books too confusing to read. Along with that, there are a lot of pictures in the book that illustrate what the author is trying to show you, so you learn about things in a textual and visual format. If you're interested in learning how to read people, it's definitely worth picking up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic!, August 6, 1999

This review is from: Secrets of Sexual Body Language (Paperback)
This book is great! I started out pretty sceptical of some ofthe very subtle ques this book talks about, but after a littleexperimentation and practice I'm impressed. Some of this is common sense, but there are a lot of signals I was sending and receiving that I never realized.
