Pietr thought he was protecting Jess by pushing her away. He might forget that he wasn't the only threads Jess got. Not to mention, while he thought he "physically" protecting her, he "mentally hurting" her by dating her best friend who was a former phycho-b***h, Sarah. I kind of think she deserved it because she's the one who pushed Pietr away in the first place.
Jess thought Pietr didn't want her anymore and tried to move on. Later, around the last two chapter or so, Pietr revealed that he pushed her away because he was protecting her from himself, not that he didn't want her. He had a hard time controlling himself around her, so he used Sarah to tame himself. (Wow, what a man?) Then the next chapter he broke up with Sarah and came back to Jess. Just like that. No explanation whether he can control himself or not. It implied that Sarah's scent tamed him enough he could be around Jess without hurting her. Ugh!

Jess thought everything would finally fall into place. Pietr understood what she wanted from him and what he needed to do with her best friend Sarah. Amy had a love, Sophia was starting to see things, Derek was interested and so much more. Even though Pietr kept pushing himself away from Jessica, she wanted so badly to be with him, and then there was Derek desperate to be with her. Wanting to treat her as the special girl she could be.
Everything twists and turns in this amazing and exciting sequel to '13 to Life'. I loved this book, as much as the first. It reminded me of why I loved the first one so much. Jess and Pietr are amazing, and Delany delves even deeper into the other characters in this novel. You get to know more about Max, Catherine, and Alexei. You learn so much about the family and realize their dreams, secrets, and their hates.

Words of Wisdom: "Shannon Delany is very good at making one learn patience. From frustrating readers with cruel cliffhanger endings to teasing fans with promises of Max and Pietr..." And still in the end I must say waiting for Secrets and Shadows was well worth the nail biting. I was hooked with 13 to Life and Secrets and Shadows was even better. I can only imagine what is to come in Bargains and Betrayals. More patience will be needed to make it to August.
Secrets and Shadows is the second book in the 13 to Life series written by Shannon Delany. As many of you may already know I love 13 to Life more specifically MAX. Ahhh Max, my favorite. To my delight Max gets some serious face time in Secrets and Shadows. Cat plays a larger role in this book to, and I learned that she's AWESOME. Oh and there is a shocker with Cat that I didn't expect. Although -between you and me- I don't think the surprises are done with her. Jess and Pietr return in full force. There were times I was not happy with Pietr, he wasn't very cooperative in certain parts, and there were times were I sat there going Awwwww because he was the Pietr we all fell in love with in 13 to Life. Jess comes up against a lot of crap in this book, and I thought she handled it very well. I didn't like Derek before and I really don't like him now. We get to learn more about him, but he's not done yet. Sarah and Amy are still around and Amy hasn't changed- which makes me very happy. There are twists and turns in the book that will keep you going. My favorite scene is of course the Halloween scene. That alone is reason enough to read this book. Book Two in the 13 to Life Series
I read the first book in this series-appropriately titled "13 to Life"-just four days ago, and I was, to say the least, enraptured. There was not one aspect of that novel I did not love. Then I picked up "Secrets and Shadows" which very cleverly takes up where the first leaves off (the same is true of the segue from this book to Book Three, "Bargains and Betrayals") and again, I raced through it. The writing is just as excellent, the characters just as strongly-drawn, and if possible, the book is even faster-paced. The revelations that have unfolded in the first novel, "13 to Life," still must be dealt with by Pietr, his sister Cat and brother Max, and with those who have come to care so deeply for them: Jessie, Amy, and Sarah. But by this point, Sarah's new-found "sanity" is balancing on the head of a pin, and the obvious emotional entanglements between Jessie and Pietr may push Sarah right over the edge-again. Additionally, Jessie's forthrightness with her new psychiatrist gives that professional plenty of reasons to take a serious, almost irreversible step, in Jessie's treatment.
More characters in this book prove to be both more and less than expected-and more information comes to the forefront. As Shakespeare had Hamlet say, "There are more things in heaven and earth," and that certainly proves to be true here, as the paranormal realm exerts even more pull on the human characters.
