From the Author

Reviewed by Shweta Shankar for Readers' Favorite

The author writes a simple story of an ordinary woman who wakes up one morning to find her life going downhill and she finds a unique way to pick herself up. In doing so she educates us about the now international concepts of yoga, karma, forgiveness and other principles which bring peace and joy into our lives. She deals with the above principles in a simple, honest, endearing way while relating to everyday events. She has even connected the physical with the spiritual and weaves the concepts smoothly into the story so that the reader is subtly educated without the feeling of being preached to. The heroine is an average being who uses her wits and the internet to overcome the hurdles life arranges in her path. Sheer determination sees her through and she comes out smelling roses with a different perspective on life.

I picked this book randomly without any expectations and found myself engrossed in the life of Melissa as she moves on in life and emerges a more confident better-shaped person with a pleasant sense of humor.
"Secrets of a Spiritual Guru" by Tamara Lee Doris is the story of the journey of a not very young woman who has been abandoned by her boyfriend who she had hoped to marry and raise a family with. All of a sudden she finds herself facing a dim future and she makes a determined effort to regain control of her life. A whole new world opens up to her and she is seen exploring the possibilities without getting immersed in self pity or drowning in tears. Great reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars LAUGH OUT LOUD FUNNY!!! May 9, 2013
I will be honest: I met Tamara through Twitter, where she invited me to be a guest on her radio show. We had a blast and became fast friends. Then she asked me if I would review her book. GULP. What if it wasn't as hilarious as she was? What if she couldn't write her way out of a paper bag? What would I say then? Still, I agreed, fearing the worst and hoping for the best.

AND THEN SHE BLEW ME AWAY. I literally could not put this book down. I was laughing/crying (I made up a new word for it: craughing) with every turn of the page. Secrets of a Spiritual Guru is warm, funny and wise, and if you don't snort wine out of your nose or see little bits of yourself in it, you need to get out and have more fun. Tamara brilliantly captures our collective neuroses (come on, you know you have them) and makes us fall in love with her heroin from page one. It's a delightful, quick read--quick because like I said, you won't want to put it down.

Not just for yogis or real estate gurus, this book is something ALL women can laugh at and relate to. Promise.

3.0 out of 5 stars The book itself is enjoyable... August 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There are parts that are a little slow, but the author's wit definitely makes up for it. The reason for the 3 stars is two-fold: the ending was abrupt (actually, it's not an ending at all) and the fact that the author states in her blog that the 2nd book is complete yet she won't release it until she had 100 reviews on this one. That's a pretty desperate marketing scheme to me. I'm tiring of the new trend where authors publish 2 half-books and masquerade them as separate books when they're actually 1 complete book published in 2 installments. It's one thing to write a complete book and then a sequel but it's frustrating to the reader to read 1/2 a book then have to wait months for the ending.

2.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed the book, but..... June 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book. A few spelling mistakes, but didn't bother me too much. The reason I gave it two stars was because of the ending. There was none! The author just cuts you off with no explanation.

4.0 out of 5 stars A hilarious read! September 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
* I received a complimentary copy of this book to review for this tour. I have not been compensated for my review and all opinions are my own.

Fans of chic-lit won't be disappointed with this novel. The story is hilarious, entertaining and hard to put down.

I totally loved Melissa and how she handled all the little ups & downs in her life. When her no-good, cheating boyfriend leaves her for his yoga instructor, Melissa decides she's going to find a way to win him back, so, she hits the internet in search of finding out what this yoga lady has that she doesn't. With the help a good, stiff drink, Melissa ends up applying for (and getting) a blogging position on `Yoga-Barbie's' website, writing about a topic she know nothing about.

I'm not the quickest reader, but I was able to devour this book in a day. I just couldn't put it down. Mellissa's character was fun, quirky and so realistic, she was so easy to relate to. I don't practice yoga, but I could easily picture what she was going through, and I couldn't stop laughing. The entire book is entertaining, and the ending sets you up for the next book in the series, which I can't wait to read.

This book will please anyone who enjoys fun, lighthearted humor. If you like to laugh, then go get this book now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Reading July 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed the tone of the book: lighthearted and engaging. The author illustrates the concept of "Be the change you want to see in the world" from a humorous--dare I say hilarious?--viewpoint. This book is so funny it's almost ridiculous yet it's somewhat plausible.

If you're hesitant about reading a book with "yoga" in the title, then don't let that deter you. I don't practice yoga; I don't believe in the spiritual implications and associations made about yoga, but I still enjoyed this fictional story.

I gave the book only 4 stars because the worldview presented is very liberal. I do not recommend this book for children or teenagers because of mature sexual-orientation related and extramarital intimacy topics. This book is NOT graphic.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book was pure fun! February 6, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I learned about this book because my friend Steve Babbit posted this photo of himself with this book and a big grin. Well, I got to know Steve on Twitter and Facebook and I had also met Tamara Dorris the same way, although I have never met Tamara in person while I do know Steve. I was getting ready to leave on vacation and we always drive. Or, I should say my husband Bill drives and I read, all the way to Florida (from Delaware). This book sounded like the perfect fun read and it absolutely was. I am also a REALTOR and I love wine and Yoga, so I could identify right away. I am an expert at none of these things so I appreciated the self-deprecation and questioning Melissa went through. It made me LOL and laugh at myself as well because I am one who takes everything way too seriously. By the end of this book I was ready to dive right into the second book and did!
