Secrets to a Successful Commercial Software (COTS) Implementation is a slim volume (177 pages including References) which covers both COTS specific topics such as the determination of the overall system Architecture, and broader topics such as the Project Management Office, Process Documentation and Testing Concepts, all of which are important for a successful implementation. In the Introduction the author states, "The primary purpose of this book is to provide a good understanding on how commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software should be implemented".
However the sections of the book which address COTS concerns, such as that on Architecture, need more detail and examples to make them truly useful. For example the Zachman framework is covered in a general description of some 16 lines. This level of information provides a brief overview, but not the "good understanding" which is the stated primary purpose of the book.
Similarly, coverage of the broader topics tends to be general. For example, any successful system implementation requires a proper approach to testing, but there was little in this section of the book that I could not have read elsewhere and no specific examples that made an impact. The unfortunate word "motherhood" comes to mind.Read more ›
