Book Description

First he’ll learn her most intimate secrets. Then he’ll arouse her deepest passions. He’s the lover she’s been waiting for: the man who can rescue her from her wicked past–for a price–in Madeline Hunter’s tale of sin, seduction, and irresistible, impossible love.

He catches her eye across the dining room–a handsome stranger who stands out among the lewd noblemen and bawdy painted women. But their worlds are about to collide in a way Roselyn Longworth could never have imagined. For before the night is out, she will be auctioned off to the highest bidder…and Kyle Bradwell will lead her from one kind of hell to another. Yet from the moment he wins her, Kyle treats Rose with a gentleness she hasn’t known since a family scandal destroyed her reputation. And when she finally learns what is really driving Kyle, it’s too late. For Rose has fallen for the man who knows her most intimate secrets. Now he has stunned her with a proposal of marriage–the first step in a seduction that will demand nothing less than her complete surrender.…

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Roselyn Longworth’s brother bilked investors of every stripe, from high-born lords to average folk, then fled England for the Continent. Bereft, Roselyn decides to accept her fate and become a lord’s mistress. She is then shocked when, after giving herself to him, he auctions her off at a rowdy dinner party. Kyle Bradwell has business with the host. When he sees what’s going on, he bids an outrageous sum for Roselyn. He knows who she is. As a self-made man, however successful, he could never approach a woman of her status. Having no intention of using her, he delivers Roselyn to her nearest relation. But the damage to her reputation is done. Will Kyle make things right? Neither he nor Roselyn can guess how much they will begin to mean to each other, or how secrets Kyle keeps will threaten their new relationship, in Hunter’s captivating, compelling story of two people succeeding against all odds. --Maria Hatton

4.0 out of 5 stars Salvation and Secrets May 24, 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback
What chance does a ruined woman have to escape her fate? Apparently none, especially when Roselyn Longwood, tricked into becoming the mistress of Viscount Norbury, is put up for auction at a drunken orgy at Norbury's home. When she is purchased for a large sum of money by a man of affairs, Kyle Bradwell, she discovers that her secret is out and that she is shunned by ladies of society. Roselyn is afraid of what this will do to her sister's chances of remaining in polite society, especially because of the scandal of her brother's fraud and subsequent flight to the continent. What hope is there for Roselyn, her sister Irene and her disappeared brother Tim?

But Bradwell hasn't finished with Roselyn yet. He's bought her to set her free but she doesn't really have a full chance of freedom. When Bradwell is encouraged to propose to Roselyn he realises the advantages the match could provide him with - as a former colliery worker and not a member of the gentry amongst whom he now moves he is not invited to society events; however, if he marries Roselyn then at least his children would be able to be part of the polite world.

But Roselyn has more secrets than Bradwell thought. As they commence married life and begin to adjust to each other Roselyn has to keep part of her life secret. Bradwell, too, has some things that he is keeping from her. However this isn't too much of the plot, most of the second half of the book is about Roselyn and Bradwell learning more about each other, difficulties with Norbury and the fallout from her brother's fraud.

As with another book by Madeline Hunter that I read earlier this year, this story is well-written with good pacing, interesting characters and some good settings.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of this series June 1, 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
This was the best book so far in this series. Ms.Hunter is my favorite romance writer, and she excels at giving you the thoughts of both main characters regarding their lives and relationships, not to mention the love. This book does bring back thoughts of "By Arrangement", but since that was my favorite romance ever, I found it wonderful. If you want a mindless book about simple people or just sex, choose another. If you want a book that really draws you in, pick this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Third in the series May 28, 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is the third book in a series. The first, Rules of Seduction, was a wonderful book, but the second, Lessons of Desire, missed the mark a bit. This book is more in the mold of Rules of Seduction. Like Seduction, it focuses on the developing relationship between the hero and heroine, without manufactured and unbelievable obstacles that are the crutch of so many romance authors. A wonderful read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Third in the Easterbrook quartet May 12, 2010
Format:Paperback
This is the third of a quartet of Georgian romances involving members or friends of the Rothwell family, the head of which is the Marquis of Easterbrook. It is set in the late 1820's.

The quartet consists of

1) "The Rules of Seduction"
2) "Lessons of Desire"
3) This book, "Secrets of Surrender"
4) "The Sins of Lord Easterbrook"

In the first book of the series, Lord Hayden Rothwell discovered that his friend, the banker Benjamin Longworth, and Benjamin's brother Timothy, had embezzled large sums of money from the customers of their bank. Because Benjamin had saved Lord Hayden from a horrible death at the hands of the Turks while they were serving together in the war of Greek independence, the wealthy Lord Hayden rescues the bank by reimbursing the defrauded customers, thereby quite literally saving Timothy's neck. (He also marries the Longworth brothers' cousin Alexia, who is the heroine of the first book.)

But although Lord Hayden mitigates the harm done by the Longworth brothers' theft, he cannot entirely remove it. To find out what ultimately happens to Benjamin Longworth you have to read first "The Rules of Seduction" and then this book: Timothy Longworth has fled abroad from those of his victims who are still seeking revenge, leaving his two sisters, Roselyn (Rose) and Irene in a very vulnerable position.

2.0 out of 5 stars Should have been better than it was August 1, 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I really wanted to like this book. I was interested in the plot and the premise -- certainly the cover blurb sounds promising -- but the actual storytelling was just not good.

There were plot holes, and I couldn't believe how clueless the heroine was about her brother. The negatives could have been forgiven, if there had been chemistry or romance, but what should have been passionate moments were very blah.

It's a very forgettable book. Definitely a library read at best.

2.0 out of 5 stars The beginning was horrible... November 26, 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I almost stopped around pg 25 or so - a real stupid damsel in distress situation. I persisted for about 200 more pages for some reason (with lots of skipping) but then put it down. The story was a bit choppy. In the middle of the story another story-line comes along - which I guess is best because it just is not a very exciting story. It is very hard to like the heroine - she is obviously not people-smart in the least bit.
