From Booklist

Secrets over Sweet Tea is a story that reminds us of the power of friendship, honesty, and an open heart. In Franklin, Tennessee, few of the people Scarlett Jo Newberry encounters are as pristine as they appear when attending her husband’s church in their Sunday best. Scarlett Jo knows that given a little time, most everyone will eventually share what’s in their hearts, and a few parishioners in particular have caught her eye. For Grace Shepherd, life has become all about surviving and controlling what small things she can. Zach Craig is focused on escape. But covering up problems doesn’t solve them, and soon both of them must face their truths. As they break and then begin to heal, Grace and Zach start to see the power of openness and faith in friendship. Scarlett Jo, the bubbly woman they both admire, must also take steps to trust and heal. Jones has written a heartfelt and inspirational tale of friendship and faith, filled with tears and laughs. Readers will absolutely delight in her sassy southern way of reminding us what matters. --Carolyn Richard

Review

TOP PICK! 4 ½
Jones can distill the heart of a woman better than most authors. This novel is a wonderful treat that women of every stage and circumstance of life can treasure. There’s no judgment here—just the love of God and the love of true friends.
SUMMARY: Scarlett Jo Newberry is a pastor’s wife in the South, and she isn’t afraid to pray for others or attempt to get in their business if she thinks they need her. Grace Shepherd just moved into the neighborhood, and although she has some secrets, Scarlett Jo is there to help when things fall apart. And when Zach and Caroline Craig’s marriage implodes, the connection continues in unlikely ways. (Romantic Times)

What we end up with are real, imperfect characters that teach us more about grace and mercy and finding your heart than we thought we needed to learn.

Denise is one of my favorite authors! I have read all of her fiction books (7, I think). She is an amazing writer! Ever since the first book - "Savannah from Savannah" I knew I was hooked.

This is a great light southern fiction book. It is fun and quirky but with a touch of seriousness and sadness to it. The whole time I was reading this I was thinking - "Steel Magnolias", "Hart of Dixie" and "GCB", I could actually picture some of the characters playing the parts in this book. I love southern fiction because it is usually fun and this book did not disappoint me.

Denise is a great character builder. I have to say that is definitely her biggest strength. As in all of her books you really get to know the characters very well. There is such detail. You really feel like you are watching a movie or TV show. I can almost hear that southern twang while I am reading.

This book seemed so real to me. The situations were real. So many times (not always) a Christian Fiction will paint a pretty picture where everything is perfect with the world. I mean, they're Christians, they're perfect right?... wrong! Even Christian sin (no one is sinless except Jesus). We all have our secrets, we all have our regrets, even us Christians. In this book... boy do they have secrets! The characters are so human; they have flaws just like the rest of us.

Here are a couple of my favorite quotes -

"I need a googler!"
He walked down the stairs from the bonus room. "Mom, you've got to learn how to work a computer."
She stared at him like he had three heads. "Jack, I have five children. You don't have five children because you want to do things for yourself. You have five children so that when they are able, they can be your slaves.

I like reading Christian chick lit. It comes without the cussing and sleeping around. The only problem is that it doesn't cover real life problems. That is what is so great about Denise Hildreth Jones' books. She is willing to get her hands dirty and cover real life situations. This is a great book. It did not turn out the way I thought it would, but that was a welcome surprise. If you want to read a Christian book that doesn't exist in fairytale land, this book is for you.

Secrets can be funny things. We think they keep us safe, but more often than not, they spill out when we least expect and make a mess out of everything. It’s a truth Scarlett Jo Newberry knows all too well—a truth Grace Shepherd and Zach Craig are about to learn the hard way. As the lives of this boisterous pastor’s wife, polished news anchor, and beleaguered divorce attorney intersect in the tree-lined streets of Franklin, Tennessee, scandal threatens to topple their carefully constructed worlds. Grasping at survival, they embark on a journey of friendship and courage, desperate to find a way back to laughter, love, and life.

This book was laugh out loud funny and oh so much fun to read. I don't remember the last time I laughed so much reading a book before! I really enjoyed the story and how the characters grew through out the book. I would totally have Scarlett as my best friend, just saying. She's so awesome and we would have so much fun together i just wish i could... Anyways I would highly recommend this book if you are looking for a light hearted read. I received this advanced readers copy from Tyndale House Publishers for review.

I liked the title and cover, the fact that it was set in Franklin Tennessee and the way the author wove the friendships throughout the heart break and how she took the time to develop the characters. Scarlett Jo was my favorite for sure!
I did struggle with the beginning which I found hard to get into, it didn't grab me as books often will. I also found the ending after all the developing she did abrupt and disappointing.
I read in the author's biography that this book was born out of heart ache and you could tell that, she knew how to write about heart ache and the feelings that go along with it.

I expected to love this book--and I did. The story takes place in Franklin, Tennessee, which is a huge plus for me since I love Tennessee, and southern fiction is my favorite kind of read.

Scarlet, the preacher's wife, is the central character and what a character she is! Actually, all the characters are believable and well developed. Though they are Christians, they're human, and make mistakes, which is another thing I loved about this book. It isn't a fluffy tale with fairytale-like issues. It delves into realistic faults, situations, and emotions.

Oftentimes, throughout the story, I could picture people I know stepping into the characters. It's uncanny how an author can do that. And entertaining as well. ☺ I loved being exposed to the misfortunes, trials of friendship, and art of forgiveness in this book.
