"Secrets In the Sand" by Alana Lorens is a very different adventure/romance, filled with tension and danger. The setting is a very unusual one, placed in the desert of New Mexico, in of all places, a bordello. The Sassafrass Social Club flies "under the radar" of society, pretty much ignored by the law because it causes no problems and is really run decently by Lily Pearl Evans, a gutsy lady who keeps a baseball bat behind the bar, and doesn't hesitate to use it if "guests" get out of hand. She treats her girls with discipline and love, and clients with courtesy.

Enter a mysterious mystery man one dark night, dust-covered and disheveled, with dried blood on his boots. He was very thirsty and seemed to be in shock. Who was he really? Dare Lily trust him? Was he a trained doctor in another life, devoted to Doctors Without Borders in Mexico? An accomplished pianist? Was his name really Nick Richards? What was he hiding from? How did a Mexican drug cartel fit into the mix?

Lily gave Nick a job as a handyman, with time to moonlight at the piano in the evenings to entertain guests, and a place to stay in a small cottage behind the bordello. He eventually trusted her enough to share that his name was really Gene, and that he had a terrible secret that he was hiding from, involving the notorious Agustin's Cartel in Mexico. When Lily's ex Lonnie betrayed Gene to the cartel, he put not just Gene, but also Lily and all her girls in danger. This led to an incredibly dangerous facedown in the nearby town's train station. Read to learn how it all finally settled out, and who survived the showdown at the station.

I don't usually pick up a romance when I'm looking for a new read, but I am so glad that "Secrets in the Sand" grabbed my attention, in part with its promise of some New Mexican Enchantment.

Lorens' book is filled with colorful, realistic characters who are more than they appear, placed into a vivid setting. Even the secondary characters have a story, and the main 'cast' as a whole is surrounded and connected by intrigue that kept me reading as Lorens judiciously doled out more and more details, creating tension to bring them closer.

For readers in search of a tasteful, well-written story that has more color and depth than various shades of the same drab tone, consider "Secrets in the Sand" and uncover the unexpected.

So, Gene, or Nick when he was lying about his name, is your all American romance hero. A sexy doctor who goes to Mexico to help the poor villagers in Puerto de Anapra through the Doctors without Borders program. Ya, ya, I know, doesn't sound very original at all but Mr. Nick has quite the baggage. He shows up on Lily's doorstep one night, bloodied and disorientated, in need of some serious downtime- and not the sexy kind. So Lily helps him out, and allows him to hide out for a while until she can assess whether or not he is a threat. Lily's baggage is just as heavy as his, as her need to help strangers has put her in some shady shit as well. Their shared history of questionable judgement creates the perfect bridge for the two to bond. Like a good recipe, love needs a cup of murder, a dash of drug cartel and a pinch of sexual assault. I told you the plot was great.

The storms within are to be feared far more than the storms outside is true for the characters in Secrets in the Sand.

Dr. Gene Nicholas feels like he sold his soul and probably his mortal life for a bit of moral satisfaction. In blind fear, he runs from the Agustin drug cartel in Mexican where he had been working as a doctor with Doctors without Borders. Scared, disoriented, exhausted and blood spattered, he appears out of the night at the door of the Sassafras Social Club in the sparsely populated corner of southeastern New Mexico.

The Sassafras Social Club, operated by Lily Pearl Evans with seven co-workers, is a place where peace reigns--a place where no questions are asked and empathic listeners are always available. Lily knows she operates on the edge of respectability but the independence that she and her co-workers have for the first time in their lives overrides all else. They keep a low profile and offer a sought-after service and nobody that disrupts is allowed to stay--well, almost nobody.

The doctor's integration into the workings of the Sassafras Social Club unveils the inner personal storms in each person there--storms that each of them tries to keep hidden. Working as a handy man under a false name, he wrestles with his conscious as he works to keep the people he cares about safe from the brutal cartel. His often ineptness efforts, his non-threatening demeanor, and his giving, caring ways endear him to the women at the club. They are comfortable with him and appreciate his input and help. Even Lily, who had long since sealed her feelings away in her determination to not be hurt again, is drawn to him. They connect in a way that she had never before experienced.
