Section 8, the latest and greatest by K'wan, boasts similar elements found in his previous "hood" tales. He effortlessly addresses many of the issues faced by many living in the inner cities today: drug abuse, promiscuity and violence.

Tionna is presently stuck between a rock and a hard place. The man of her dreams is currently doing time. Duhan expects Tionna to hold him down, while he attempts to beat his case, all the while knowing that Tionna is penniless and barely able to care for their two children.

She's prepared to "ride" for her man until she meets Don B., CEO of Big Dawg Entertainment. Assuming he's the answer to her prayers, Tionna swiftly discovers he's her worst nightmare.

Gucci, Tionna's best friend, knows she's a dime piece and dares anyone, male or female, to think otherwise. This likable character has been down for Tionna through thick and thin. When Gucci finally meets someone whom she finds fascinating, she fears she may lose him before they have the chance to become acquainted.

Multifaceted, Tayshawn a/k/a Animal can't seem to leave the pandemonium of the streets behind. This gifted storyteller is granted an opportunity to become the newest and hottest rapper on the scene. Will his loyalty to Tech, his partner in crime, hinder Animal from exiting the streets indefinitely?

Along with a spectacular plot and plausible characters, K'wan unveils his comedic side with the introduction of Ronnie, Gucci's mother. She's a no-nonsense, blunt smoking woman who's been around the block ... several times. She dishes out advice, much to the dismay of Gucci and her friends, yet she does so in a humorous way.

I genuinely enjoyed reading this novel. Section 8 merits a perfect rating of five stars. I believe it's his finest work thus far.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kwan Delivers Again, October 29, 2009
With Kwan's books you have to be in the mood to take your time and let the story play out, you can't rush it. Once you finish you feel satisfied because he always delivers a good read and this book was no exception. I would definitely recommend Section 8!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as his norm, October 24, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The book started out slow for me. I learned new characters, then had to relearn the old characters, which was frustrating for me. I did love the mixing of characters new and old. But there were some blips. In this book, Jah, Yoshi, Lou Loc, and Gutter were supposedly real, fellow New Yorkers...LEGENDS!! But then, one of the characters is reading the book "Gutter." A little slip, I guess. The book was typical K'wan. Once it took off, it was great until the end. I'm hanging on for the next one. And for those of us who aren't New Yorkers and aren't familiar with the slang, you can sometimes get lost. I was a good book overall and I'd buy it again!

5.0 out of 5 stars K'wans Best Yet, October 7, 2009
This is one of his best and one of the best I read this year. Now every one knows when you read a K'wan book you have to be on point because he gives you a story. You meet allot of knew characters but meet some of the old ones that you have heard of like Teck, Shannon, Yosi and Reese. I give this one 5 stars because of the way he painted a pic of all the hood and the message was real.

"Section 8" by best selling author K'wan, was one I eagerly waited on, along with the rest of this author's huge fan base.
K'wan's novels usually have me sitting up straight and shaking my head in the process, while he unleashes gritty street realism and huge drama plots from beginning to the end. This one was a little different.

This story started off slowly as K'wan left out a lot of his "gritty" scene stealers and concentrated on reacquainting us with former characters while building up the story for what I call the "Jump off" who in my mind is Animal and Gucci.

You see what I expected was some serious drama involving Tionna since she was in such a predicament... which DID come towards the end. But while I appreciated the reminder of the role certain characters played previously and the background on new ones it was definitely overwhelming.
I wanted to know more on Reese, Yoshi and Dena, yes, we did catch up with their present situations but minus any drama.

There were highlights such as Ronnie, Gucci's mother who is hilarious and keeps it real! And the character Happy who pins his money inside his boxers...LMAO! I did notice the description of characters clothing without too much brand names thrown at me...^5 on that!

But the best part of this story for me was Animal and Gucci, who I mentioned earlier. Their relationship "jumped off" the pages and sparks flew as these two head strong personalities wrestle with love and their future.
So with Animal, Gucci, Tionna and Don B's drama heating up the pages, my back started straightening up and my head started shaking...YES! But alas... there were no more pages left to read...I was left hanging!

Bottom line, slow start, redemption and then a cliff hanger. I really want to read how Animal and Gucci's relationship pans out, and oh lawd... has Tionna met her match in Don B?

If you haven't read any of the Hood Rat series this is the one to read as this is certainly a stand alone book. Die hard fans... we'll be looking out for the next installment which will be out later with year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Street Banger by K'wan!!!, March 20, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
"Section 8" is another 5 star page turner from talented author K'wan. I have had this book for months and I finally got around to reading it. I don't know why I waited so long. This book was great! True there were a lot of characters but I think they all brought a little something to the story. The story is focused on Tionna her BFF Gucci, and her man Duhan who is locked up. Tionna has to move back to the hood with her 2 kids after her fairytale life with Duhan is ended when he gets knocked. Then there is Tech (Jah's former partner)Silk, China White and Animal (Tech's crew); they are robbing, killing and causing havoc in the streets. Don B makes another appearance and Big Dawgz entertainment is still doing their thing; trying to get talent and screw people along the way. There is also an appearance from Reese, Billy and Yoshi from the previous books. The Senate are a bunch of old timers that see it all on the block. Rock Head is a wanna be baller that spends his time getting it in with jailbait. All of these people are all tied in to one heck of a story that has an ending that is not at all happy for all involved!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Started slow but finished fast, November 19, 2009

I have read every one of K'wan's books and I can say that I am a fan for life. This is the 3rd book in his Hood Rat series. I must say that I really anticipated this book and when I got it, I was a little bit disappointed at first. It seemed to have so many characters to keep up with and the story started off kind of slow. When I got half way through the book, it really picked up and I couldn't put the book down. K'Wan is a wonderful storyteller and it's like you are almost right there. So after I got through the beginning, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend others read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it..., October 24, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Section 8 in the beginning was very slow 2 me, I put the novel down a couple of times b4, and almost jus thought 2 4get it, but if I had I would have felt cheated if I hadn't read the entire story. It heated up around page 200(middle/end) and then the pages started flippin, and I had 2 finish.
Animal and Gucci just set things off 4 me, the connection they shared grabbed the interest more 4 them 2 to be 2gether. I like how they kept things real between them. Animal alone kept me reading, and I'm looking 4ward 2 hearing from those 2 again.
Tionna was 1st off not as interesting and I feel she played herself with both Duhan and Don B.
This was my 1st read by K'wan, and I give it 4 stars, but I really feel like a 3.5,.... Not a bad read tho.
