Section Z

Three Stars - Just another 8-bit shooter but with a slight adventure feel

"Captain Commando" made his debut in the video gaming industry in the game "Section Z", released in 1985 as a coin-op.. The game is a forced scrolling shooter and one of the few such titles made by Capcom in the 8-bit era. Konami dominated the shooter during the late 1980s, but Capcom proved themselves to come up with a memorable title as well. This was also an early NES game, being released in 1987.

Capcom released the game as an arcade title, an NES title, and as a Famicom Disk System title. The game has three main sections, and each section has twenty sub-levels associated with the game. The FDS version has three save files, whereas in the NES title you had to defeat the game in one setting. The original arcade version is included in Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 1 for PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

"Section Z" is a shooter, though it is rather unique as once you beat a stage, you choose between two teleporters, which will take you to different levels of the game. This provided a "choose your own adventure" feel to the game unusual for the shooter genre in the 1980s.

The video game website IGN rated this title as the 90th greatest game on their top 100 NES games of all time.

This was a must buy for me. The memories it brings to mind of friends long gone is what sold me on this title.
