A definite sonic improvement,

Rush has long been my favorite band, and I have more or less owned every iteration of these albums that Rush has released: cassettes, then vinyl, then the initial Mercury CD pressings, and the 1997 remasters. But even my "fanboy-ness" knows its limits, so when these box sets were first announced, I was a bit sceptical. Was this another desperate Mercury cash-grab, as has been alleged on so many Rush fan sites? My reservations disappeared as soon as I held this set. First, the packaging is very nice. Each album is done as a replica of the original vinyl release. Having spent hours upon hours in high school looking at the gatefolds for the vinyl versions, this was like coming home to an old friend. A booklet is also included with printed lyrics, rare photos, album credits, etc (apparently just in case the album replica writing was too small.....) But I was most pleased with the sound. In a side-by-side with the '97 releases (which as a whole I thought were very well done), these new remasters do present a very clear, if subtle improvement. This batch of albums especially have always suffered from murky sound. These remasters FINALLY fix that problem -- it's as if a layer of murk has been removed from the sound. The effect is most noticable in the crispness of the drums, but there are sonic improvements to be noticed across the board. And it's not just a matter of louder mastering either. In fact, the volume here is nearly identical to that of the 1997 remasters. These versions really do sound better. Then of course, there is the fabulous 5.1 mix of "Fly By Night." What an amazing job! Until you've heard "Anthem" coming t you from all angles, you haven't lived. So, in the end, for the $45 price tag, I would say these are worth it. Perhaps not if you primarily listen as MP3, but all in all a great job done by the engineers and Mercury.

First off I would like to say, being an ardent RUSH fan for over 30 years, and have collected every version of cd and vinyl releases, this set is by far the best quality it has ever sounded, it is clear and superb sounding, very crystal,no hiss, and the best . My problem lies in my cd copy of FLY BY NIGHT !and if any of you have the same problem PLEASE point it out! On the tracks of ANTHEM, FLY BY NIGHT, RIVENDELL ,and IN THE END, there are glitches on the songs, and I can't tell if it's a disc defect or a manufactuer defect, so if anyone else has the same problem , please speak up, before I take this back for exchange.Other than that, this set does deserve a five star rating, this is by far the best and the DVD AUDIO of FLY BY NIGHT sounds fantastic even on my old style tv.I do wish they would have added the rare long awaiting first single NOT FADE AWAY/YOU CAN'T FIGHT IT".( yes I know it was not a MERCURY release) , but nevertheless, it would have been a gem to add that on this set. I will now listen to Sectors 2 & 3 and give my review there, To all RUSH fans , BUY THESE SETS.!!!

Please be aware of the following before purchasing this:Sector 1) Fly By Night consistently has glitches all the way through, with the audio disappearing from one of the channels. Occurring at least once (sometimes twice) on all but one of the tracks. Sector 2) The Hi-Res stereo version of Closer To The Heart is not a stereo master but rather an erroneous version of the front 2 channels of the 5.1 mix. There are also questionable decisions made to the remix of Cygnus X-1. Sector 3) The wrong mixes were used on at least 7 of the Hold Your Fire tracks. Each box is flawed in some way. If this doesn't bother then go nuts......
