A must read for every investment professional,
By Irwin M. Fletcher "Irwin M Fletcher" (New York City) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sectors and Styles: A New Approach to Outperforming the Market (Wiley Finance) (Hardcover)
Sectors & Styles is a first rate "how to" guide for both seasoned and novice investors alike. Catalano has a unique ability to cut to the chase and get investment strategy down to the nuts and bolts of what is really important for anyone (Portfolio Managers and Soccer Moms alike) investing their pool of capital. He effectively demonstrates the power of "Mr. Market" mixing it up with geo-political forces and world economies and their inter-play at any given time. -- Jonathan T. Woods

By Tom Wilson (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sectors and Styles: A New Approach to Outperforming the Market (Wiley Finance) (Hardcover)
This book is an excellent guide to building and managing an investment portfolio. It doesn't promise that you'll make millions. . . but it does provide the principles and strategies you need to create an investment portfolio for long-term growth. It's intelligent, easy to understand, and practical.

ETFs to the Rescue,

This review is from: Sectors and Styles: A New Approach to Outperforming the Market (Wiley Finance) (Hardcover)
As Vincent Catalano explains so eloquently, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) make it easy for investors to create their own effective portfolios. Because ETFs often (but not always) have low fees, with a little bit of research, investors may be better off creating their own portfolio of portfolios than relying on expensive money managers. The book is most beneficial to non-professionals who have a working knowledge of investments. However, professional investors can also benefit from the insights found on these pages. In particular, this book is a wake-up call to those who make their living managing other peoples' money.

Revealing the Secret to Investing Success - ETF Sector and Styles,
By Doug (NY, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sectors and Styles: A New Approach to Outperforming the Market (Wiley Finance) (Hardcover)
After struggling as an individual investor to pick the "right" stock, Vincent Catalano's book has opened the curtain to investment success for me, and the answer is - ETFs. The book presents a compelling argument for using a sector and style approach and cured me of individual "stockitis".When I looked into the author's success as outlined in his weekly newsletter, Sectors and Styles Strategy Report, I saw how focusing on ETFs beat the S&P by nearly 3% in a Model Growth Portfolio year-to-date. Vincent, thanks for revealing the pros secrets.....

I have read many investment books and this is one of my favorites. Vincent, presents a "big picture" approach to investing with style and sector asset allocation using ETF's. The book was presented in an easy to read fashion and clearly communicates how the pros invest by underweighting and overweighting the major S&P Sectors. This is a must read for anyone who wants to invest like the Pros.

I read this book cover to cover within a few days of receiving it. It gave me a valuable perspective on the market that I was looking for - a top level view. I plan to go back and study areas of this book, as well as gather and analyse the types of information discussed in this book. The investment approach described makes very logical sense for active investing for the long term.

ETFs are the latest fad in atempting to beat the market. The author's verbose explanations about how to do this left me thinking that I'd be better off in an index fund than trying to outsmart an almost efficient market in this manner. I doubt that the subtitle "A new approach to outperforming the market" is accurate. Those who want to use ETFs should stick with mainstream ones like DIA, SPY, IWM. Trying to pick the "hot sectors" with ETFs is playing the "loser's game," and is what many underperforming money managers have been doing for decades.
