This informative volume focuses on individual PCs and Local Area Network systems and covers security issues ranging from hackers to physical theft. The author provides tips for setting up files for software licenses, manuals, and for designing a system profile for risk analysis and maintenance. Each chapter addresses a specific issue such as physical security, security policies and standards, methods for maintaining privacy, password development, user training, and Internet security. While the coverage is comprehensive, readers will be able to garner a basic understanding of problems they may face in the future and how a proactive approach can be developed to meet those difficulties. The practical applications are useful. While large system administrators may not need this information, the user-friendly format and wide range of timely topics will appeal to librarians who are in charge of computer and technology systems in smaller public libraries and schools. Complete with scenarios, charts, sample forms, and related Web site URLs, the book also includes a CD-ROM with many of the programs and utilities described in the text.

Step-by-step solutions, many supported by "field-tested, hacker-resistant, shareware" programs on the enclosed CD-ROM (not available for review), are offered for all kinds of problems.
