Hello,

I stuck my neck out on this system after seeing several mixed reviews. This is a verified AMAZON purchase and I review all kinds of things through videos - from A/V cables, car alram systems, tablets, night creams, lotions, toothpaste etc.

I started noticing a pattern in the negative reviews and they were:

-Someone upset over receiving an NVR without a hard drive BUT clearly states in the description when it doesn't come with the hard drive.
-Difficulty setting up the system BUT I found it incredibly easy if your patient and let the NVR find the cams automatically for you. YOU NEED to have the internet CONNECTED prior to turning on the NVR so the cams are located!
-Complaints about directions not being robust enough YET in the QUICKSTART (yes, QUICKSTART) manual it tells you to please go to the website for full directions if you are having issues. Again, I never went to the site and was up and running.
-Image quality was outputting lower than expected - The cams are by DEFAULT set at a lower resolution out of the box so you must right click each camera and adjust the settings accordingly!

I love this system so much im looking at an 8-channel upgrade. The camera resolution is AMAZING. I record videos with a Flip HD or my iPhone 5S and this nearly rivals that clarity - not an exaggeration.

Setup is easy with only 2 or 3 screens to fill information on (system time, name, phone number, email address-for notifications/alarms)

The PoE setup is sooooo easy that if you cant handle this then a security system isn't frankly meant to be in your possession.

I love the motion sensors with alarms to the NVR system - masking performed as expected.

The camera housings on this particular model are top notch.

For the price, you can't beat this system. It is easy to setup, the 720p cameras provide nice clear video and the NVR makes it easy to review activity on each of the cameras.

Pros:
- Price
- 720p Camera Picture Quality
- NVR Playback capabilities (motion detection makes it easy to go to the times of interest, can also define motion masks)
- Easy to set up Android and iPhone mobile apps by scanning QR code on bottom of the NVR
- PoE for the cameras is the way to go; one low voltage cable to run to each camera

Cons:
- Night vision limited (as is the case for most of these cameras). Having motion light sensors or reflectors helps greatly but night distance is limited if there is absence of outdoor lighting
- Ball Joint Mounts for the Camera don't adjust/hold that well. Concern is that a strong wind may move the camera angle. One mount in particular was hard to tighten all the way. I may replace with something else.
- Ethernet Cables provided could have been longer (I needed to run cables back-to-back to lengthen the runs)
- Web-based access to NVR is limited to using Internet Explorer (PC Only).
- In IE, must temporarily disable "Allow ActiveX Filtering" and must enable prompting to download unsigned ActiveX controls and Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe. The ActiveX control installed at prompt has it's text in Chinese characters which may make some people feel uncomfortable. Since I am running a newer version of IE, I also had to set up compatibility view mode for my DDNS address. The knowledgebase online provides good screen captures on what is necessary in this regard
- The short Ethernet cable provided for connected to the local router was defective.

The good:
- image quality is GREAT during the day - much better than what you would get from an analog camera.
- IR mode turns ON automatically during the night
- There is software for Windows and for mobile platforms, and it is adequate
- Easy to set up
- It does what it supposed to - writes video to a hard drive. You can explore the video later.

The bad:
- There are 2 longer cables and 2 shorter ones. I needed 3 long ones and one shorter cable. I had to make a longer cable myself out of old cat-5 cable. It is not that hard if you have tooling.
- night time image resolution is not quite 720p. You can see things, but it is by far not as good as day-time image.
- ball mount is barely adequate. It works, but I'm concerned that strong wind might turn my cameras around.
- windows application shows both individual cameras and the device+cameras. Every time I restart the application, I need to re-search network for cameras.
- The device not always play nicely with the other computers on the network. It pretends to be an alternative gateway or something like that. Everything kind of work, but I needed to restart some computers to make them work on the network again.

UPDATE 9/2/14: I originally gave this product five stars for easy of use and value, but I'm now reducing that rating to three stars. However, after three months of use, the NVR (the "computer") died on me. No power at all. So I emailed Zmodo on 8/18 to request a repair or replacement. Two days later, I still didn't have an RMA to return it, so I emailed them again. It took another two days to finally get an RMA. I shipped the dead NVR out immediately. Today, I tracked the shipment, and it was delivered on 8/28, so they've had it for six days. I haven't heard anything from them, so I emailed support a couple of hours ago--still no reply. So I just now tried calling and there are "27 callers ahead" of me with an estimated wait time of 50 minutes! It's extremely frustrating to go weeks without my cameras, which I rely on for monitoring my backyard chickens, my pets, and for outside security. If you are considering purchasing Zmodo cameras for critical applications, I don't think I could recommend it. Lowering rating to two stars.

UPDATE 9/3/14: Got an automated email from Zmodo today that said "We received your returned merchandise today. Our RMA technicians will test your items as soon as possible. All items are tested in the order that they are received." Except that the FedEx tracking site shows that it was delivered on 8/28, 7 days ago. This company just doesn't get it. Dropping the review from two stars to one star. Look elsewhere for a PoE Network Camera system, my friend.

ORIGINAL REVIEW (five stars):
Easy to install. The hardest part is dragging cable through your attic and drilling, but that's necessary for any wired system. I did it myself in about half a day. Once the cables were installed, it's really ply-and-play. I love the operating system.
