5.0 out of 5 stars Acid reflux - GONE, digestive function - Excellent, July 12, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I've had acid reflux over two periods in my life: early twenties and late thirties. First time went away on its own after 3 miserable years. Came back more than a decade later, a year and a half ago. Went from tolerating quite spicy Indian, Mexican, Thai with no problems to being unable to eat a tomato or a slice of pizza or some chocolate without 4-5 hours of really bad acid. Turned to Zantac, 150mg extra strength because anything less was ineffective. Ended up taking Zantac 4 out of 7 days a week on average for almost a year, even though I was avoiding any triggers. I was miserable and I was unable to fix the problem, only cover the symptoms. That's the background story.

Fast-forward. Friend recommended probiotics. I tried i-Flora. Take it together with a bunch of other supplements, just added 1 i-Flora a day. Two days into the treatment the acid went away, permanently.

It's now been more than a month, and my digestive health has never been this good. The acid is a long forgotten memory. I can eat spicy food again. I've had Thai, Mexican, Indian, pizza. I even had some fried food (rare treat, used to cause a lot of acid). Nothing, not a single mild annoyance. The occasional gas and cramps: gone. Habits are now as regular as clockwork. Sorry to be graphic, but this is digestive health so might as well: stool is consistent, regular, healthy and near odorless. My whole digestive system has NEVER been this healthy.

Pros:
- Started working in 48 hrs
- Chronic and very bad acid reflux GONE COMPLETELY
- Occasional gas and cramps, gone
- Stomach, bowel working better than ever
- Can eat spicy food again, without any problems
- Can eat heavy or rich food, no problems

Cons: NONE

I haven't written too many reviews, but I had to write this one. It really did make a huge difference in my life. Any doctor should be ashamed for not suggesting probiotics to solve the cause instead of pharmaceuticals to cover-up symptoms. I'm so glad my friend recommended probiotics and this brand did the trick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probiotics prevent many auto-immune disorders, July 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As far as this specific probiotic goes, it seems pretty good. It has 16 active cultures and includes a little fructooligosaccharide - a type of fiber found in some vegetables. Fiber is by definition stuff we cannot digest, but bacteria can. So it's like fertilizer for the probiotics you're taking.

I think that any decent probiotic supplement or fermented food with live cultures is a good thing to make part of your diet. Tons of research is demonstrating that a lot of auto-immune disorders can be caused simply by sterilizing the intestines followed by introducing various bad bacteria cultures. The bad bacteria cultures digest components of our food and have nasty byproducts/waste. In the absence of "good" bacteria cultures in the intestines, this waste from bad bacteria cultures cause inflammation. The inflammation in time damages the villi lining of the intestines, making it more permeable - ie it allows more partially digested food and bacterial waste into the bloodstream. When whole proteins start getting into the blood stream, the immune system may think it's an infection, and trains to remove protein. What else is like protein? Lots of organs, joints, and tissue. So in some circumstances the body will fallaciously attack itself. This is what an auto-immune disorder is.

The medical term for the effect of bad bacteria in the gut is "increased intestinal permeability", but often is refereed to as "leaky gut".

This isn't quack science or snake oil. You can tell if it's working because your feces should start becoming like the ice cream out of an old school ice cream dispenser. You shouldn't ever be bloated, and probably will see less body wide inflammation. You can go to websites like sciencedaily or read through the medical literature at pubmed, JAMA, etc and see some pretty compelling studies. On several occasions scientists have made lean rats obese simply by sterilizing the lean rat's intestines, and then transplanting bad bacteria from an obese rat to the lean rat. It causes the lean rat to start overeating. Perhaps the obesity epidemic is simply an auto-immune disorder of the hypothalamus. Studies have shown that inflamed hypothalamus does not respond well to leptin - the hormone that reduces hunger. The more body fat you have, the more leptin the fat produces. But if your hypothalamus doesn't get the message, the brain thinks it's starving.

What do bad bacteria love? Sugar & flour. What was over-prescribed in the late 20th century? Antibiotics. If you combine anti-biotics with sugar/flour heavy diet, you are essentially reproducing the steps of the study on making lean rats obese. You are sterilizing the intestines, which remove both good & bad bacteria, and then you provide an environment that favors bad.

And it's not just obesity. All sorts of other autoimmune disorders have been caused in labs through bad bacteria like MS and arthritis. Maybe heart disease is simply the body attacking it's own arteries, and like a fire truck putting out a fire cholesterol is at the crime scene and blamed (cholesterol is used to heal stuff in the body, it's not a toxin). That would certainly explain why the medical literature shows no correlation between cholesterol & the incidence of heart disease.

Now the good bacteria not only competes and crowds out the bad, it also assists us in digesting stuff we normally can't. It makes anti-inflammatory short chain fatty acids out of some fiber and carbohydrates.

But outside of my rant, I would recommend:
1. Reduce sugar and non-fermented grain consumption. Bad bacteria loves this.
2. Increase consumption of vegetables and nuts. Fermented whole grains are fine, but tedious. This feeds the probiotics in these pills. Otherwise they won't work very well.

5.0 out of 5 stars No more stomach discomfort!, December 9, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I flora was once called flora source from Sedona Labs. This product contains Acidophillus and 15 other "friendly" bacteria that humans need for proper digestive function. For the last few years, I have developed food allergies to dairy and even rice. My stomach was constantly bloated and cramped. Iflora has helped me to stop the bloating and cramps. The bacteria even help with some of my lactose intolerance because they produce lactase, an enzyme that helps break down lactose. I rate this product with 5 stars.
