Bought this since I had a couple of days available to climb in Sedona over Christmas. Very disappointed in the overall quality of the maps and approach descriptions. The overview maps are cartoonish and do not provide enough detail for anyone not already familiar with the areas. The approach descriptions are also lacking in detail and/or are self-contradictory.

Specifically:
Went to do the regular route on Queen Victoria Tower. The map on p.139 shows the cowpies trail running just below the formations, the trail is actually much lower and closer to the road. The map on p.140 is a mix of top view and silhouette that does nothing to clarify this. The approach descriptions for Queen Victoria and Moose's Butte (which should be leading to the same point) are contradictory. We did the climb and managed to find the correct trail on the descent, but could have been saved a lot of time and effort with a better map.

Went to do Mars Attacks. The map on p.265 shows following the Devil's Bridge trail until roughly even with the end of Fin Rock and then angling cross-country to just left of Mars Attacks, while the description mentions "climber's trails and slabs". We managed to get to the climb this way, but it involved a bit of sketchy 4th class that would have been even worse on the way down. Dealing with this approach delayed us enough that another party showed up at the climb ahead of us (in addition to the party already on the route) so we decided to bail. They gave us directions for the correct approach/descent that comes up to the west end of Fin Rock. After this we looked for Ten Minute Spire/Hidden Tower and found the map on p.257 to be basically useless with no mileage given for the correct parking spot.

Gave up on Hidden Tower and went to do Ursa Minor.

Nice cover masks an 80s style primitive guide on cheap paper with an absence of relevant detail. Would not recommend.

Well, by comparison this is a vast improvement over the previous guides which were totally worthless IMO. This guide is a throwback done "old school" style with hand-drawn artwork. This is not entirely a bad thing in my book, but modern climbers tend to expect glossy color photo-topos and GPS coordinates for hard-to locate areas. I agree that more accurate approach beta and more detailed overview maps would have made this a better guide. Some details are vuage, but it at least is more comprehensive and seems to have good info for the basalt areas and some sport climbing options. Sedona has always been an adventure and this book keeps it so.

I sustained an injury due to bad approach beta in this book. We set out for "The Waterfall Area" in hopes of finding sport climbing (there is none lower than 5.11--there's not really any sport in Sedona), and this book says the approach is "30-40 minutes up a big drainage." Well, it's up a drainage, but it took us closer to 3 hours with fairly intense 3rd class scrambling. The injury was due to poison ivy/oak, which this guide failed to warn us of.

We were also set back several hours due to bad approach beta for the rabbit ears spire. This book is not good for someone new to the area.

Also, almost none of the topos and route descriptions have photographs. All are hand drawn, for every area in the book. Which is a major flaw, imo.

The only reason I'm giving it two stars instead of one is that it's fairly comprehensive.
