We had been to Sedona once before for 2 days and were only slightly familiar with the area. This time we brought "Sedona's Top 10 Hikes" with us for our 6 day trip. We only wished we could have done more of the hikes. We are not hiking people by any means. This book is a great guide for the novice and pro. Just a side note - it is not stressed enough how rough the roads are up Schnebly Hill. Take a jeep tour or rent a jeep. We took a camaro convertible. Even so, it was amazing!

I am visiting Sedona for the first time from the North Cascade Mountains in Washington State. The author is sensitive to tourist hikers and rates the hikes conservatively yet gives many options for a variety of abilities. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to experience the hiking possibilities in the Sedona area.

This is a super book for hikers in Sedona. If you are new to the town it will give you a good introduction. The route directions are thorough. You'd have to struggle to get lost on them. The selection and variety of routes is sensible.
The beauty of this book is in its photographs. Larry Lindahl is a top Arizonan photographer and his love of the landscape shows through in these photographs. A lovely guidebook both for practical use, and for a memento.

My wife and I enjoy Sedona as one of our favorite destinations for hiking and photography. We have several books and maps of the area and can recommend this one with no hesitation.
If you are a first time visitor to Sedona get this book so that you can get out and enjoy some trails without any fear of picking the wrong one (too strenuous or too long). The photos are stunning and the narrative helps you plan and explore more effectively. If you have been there before get this book so that you (like we did) can find some spots you might have otherwise missed. If you are a serious hiker and usually use more detailed, topographic maps this is still a good resource that adds narrative that is just not part of a topo map. By the way, the "Sedona Trails Map" by Emmit Barks Cartography is a great companion to the Top 10 Hikes book if you are planning to get out and do even more exploring of the Red Rocks and the vorteces. Bottom line - Get this book.

Sedona Hiking,

Guidebook author Dennis Andres, an informed and enthusiastic hiker, shares his knowledge about Sedona in an easy to read, introductory book for visitors. He gives readers an overview of hiking in the desert, how to prepare, what to bring, and most of all, how to enjoy your experience outdoors. His tips about where to get lunch, dinner, or his mention of other nearby sites to consider visiting, adds interesting additional information.

The author's descriptions and trail details are excellent. Provides a nice comfort feeling when hiking in unfamiliar areas. There is a lot of road and trail head improvements going on in Sedona, so don't be suprised (as we were) when "dirt road" is now paved, etc.

Outstanding and relevant guide book,
This review is from: Sedona's Top 10 Hikes (Paperback)
Let me preface by saying that Sedona is one of my favorite places in the US. The author, who I have hired as a personal guide, shares some of his best hikes in this well written, easy to follow text.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

We hike with our daughter, almost 7 yrs old, so we need to find that happy medium of time, distance, and degree of difficulty. The format of this book made that easy to do. We pulled it out over our hotel breakfast, and we quickly scanned the up front index of pictures and ratings. We jumped right to the 'Short time / Moderate Difficulty' hikes, looked at the pictures and descriptions, and we were off in a matter of minutes. We saw only about 20 other people on our Hike up Doe Mesa on a very busy Saturday, so it was nice to get away from the weekend crowds which were everywhere else in Sedona. Nice format for the quick trip. The ratings were just right - it was just difficult enough to be exciting for all of us.

This book really helped during my vacation in Sedona, and I highly recommend it. The driving directions are helpful, trail descriptions are right on target, the maps are good, and it has fine color pictures. This book includes GPS coordinates for every trail: the beginning, end and important points along the way. Many hiking books do not have GPS coordinates. Also, this trail book was written by a local who knows these trails well. You could save money and rely on those little trail brochures they hand out for free in Sedona, but this book has so much more, that it is worth every penny. After hiking six of the ten trails, I consider this book the gold standard in day-hike books.

The author does a great job of laying out the hikes in and aroud Sedona. He gives you a good feel for what you will see, how to get there, where to park, and exact highlights of the what you will see on your hikes. At least on the easy end, I think the author is a little cautious on how he classifies hikes. I think anyone in moderately decent physical shape should have not have difficulty with moderate hikes. Some of the easy hikes are beautiful so you don't want to bypass those, but for me, those are walks and anyone who has no trouble physically walking will have no trouble with them. The guide is compact enough to take with you on your hikes/walks.
