Book Description

Seduced by a Pirate is an original, RITA-award winning e-novella from New York Times bestselling author Eloisa James. Sir Griffin Barry is one of the most feared pirates on the high seas, piloting the Flying Poppy, a ship he named after the wife whom he fondly (if vaguely) remembers, since they were together only a matter of hours.

What happens when a pirate decides to come home to his wife…if she is his wife, given that the marriage was never consummated? And what happens when that pirate strolls through his front door and is met by…

Well, that's a surprise!

Seduced by a Pirate and a long novella, With This Kiss, can be found in print in Eloisa's collection, As You Wish. Seduced by a Pirate includes three chapters of a companion novel, The Ugly Duchess.

Rating: B+ ... Heat: Warm

I was really excited to learn that Miz James was going to be releasing a companion novella to The Ugly Duchess. The moment that the brawny and bronzed Griffin limped onto those pages, I wanted to know more about him. And the poor wife he left behind for more than a decade.

Sir Griffin Barry is a pirate. And a husband. A very absent husband. After a calamitous wedding night, Griffin disappeared from England and ended up ruling the high seas as Captain of The Flying Poppy for fourteen years. And, if not for his injured leg, he may never have stepped back on English soil again. But once he is back in London and civilization, knowing his bum leg would be a death sentence in his old world, Griffin decides to start over. His first order of business: reclaim his long neglected wife.

Phoebe, abandoned by her husband and unsure why, was never willing to dwell on it or pity herself. Though her family may have bought her a husband, she never needed him or his name and title. I loved how independent she was, how she defied everyone's expectations. Phoebe was definitely not what Griffin was expecting. Me either, for that matter.

From the very first, when husband and wife are reunited--sparks fly and tempers flare. Combine one rough and rugged privateer with a self-sufficient lady used to answering to no man and, yeah, the sparks start a'flyin'! And misunderstandings grow... till their passion boils over... and the truth with it. The truth about Griffin's disappearance, the reason for Phoebe's three children. The truth of their marriage in general.

Seduced by a Pirate was cute and charming and full of surprises. And it was full to the brim of lusty and tender moments between Griffin and Phoebe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Quickie! October 30, 2012

Seduced by a Pirate - by Eloisa James (Novella)

This is the wonderful companion novella to the book from August "The Ugly Duchess". It makes no difference as to which book you read first.

In this novella, we find that Sir Griffin Barry has come back to England after 14 years at sea to finally consummate his marriage... his marriage of 14 years. It seems that the evening of the day he got married; he had problems, went and got drunk. Once drunk he was kidnapped to a pirate ship. After some years, he managed to get control of the ship and things turned for the better. Now he has been hurt and has come back.
Griffin may not have consummated his marriage but Poppy (Phoebe) now has three children and does not want to be married. Until she starts daydreaming of Griffins big beautiful body!

This quick read is perfect for a rainy afternoon when you need to kill a couple of hours. It has well fleshed out characters, a good story with plenty of funny parts and truly romantic love scenes. Ms James remains one of the very few historical authors that I still enjoy and I see that she will most likely stay that way.

2.0 out of 5 stars Short and noneventful. October 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The hero is an ex-pirate (OK, privateer or maybe pirate who pirates only from pirates) so I expected a little emotional swashbuckling here. But no. This is a generic, somewhat uninteresting romance.

If you read The Ugly Duchess (Happily Ever After...), you know all about Sir Griffin Barry, cousin of the hero of that book and renowned pirate who left his bride on their wedding night before consummation of the marriage and found himself on the high seas. He spends the next 14 years pirating from pirates and slave ships, releasing the slaves, investing booty wisely and becoming a rich man. An injury to his leg requires him to give up his pirating ways and he heads home.

Griffin's wife Phoebe has been living an independent life and is not looking forward to or hoping for Griffin's return. I, on the other hand, as a reader, was looking forward to this reunion, expecting major fireworks, with resentment, distrust, disgust and dislike of the hero on the part of the heroine. Major groveling on the part of the hero would also have been good and most of the novel spent in a long and difficult reconciliation.

But no. Hero returns home. Heroine is there with three children. Hero sleeps with heroine. That's basically it. Everybody is happy. (Except, I guess, for me.) I also forgot to mention that there was some sort of estrangement between hero and his father and that also turned out to be a nonevent.

So I found this to be disappointing and a bit boring. I wanted some conflict between H and h. I got nothing. BTW, the novella takes up only 76% of the download. The rest is Eloisa James promoting her other work. Is she hard up for money lately? She does a lot of self-promotion in her books' afterwords.

1.0 out of 5 stars seduced by a pirate October 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
seriously??? this was ridiculously short. he spends 14 years away, left on his wedding day, never spent any time with her and on his first evening home he tells her he is in love with her while they have sex for the first time. then the next page is a few months in the future, everyone is happy and pregnant. then next chapter they have twins and live happily ever after. there, just saved you 99 cents.

More About the Author

A reviewer from USA Today wrote that she "found herself devouring [Eloisa's] book like a dieter with a Hershey bar"; People Magazine raved that "romance writing does not get much better than this." Eloisa wrote her first novel after graduating from Harvard, but alas, it was rejected by every possible publisher. After she got a couple more degrees and a job as a Shakespeare professor, she tried again, with much greater success. Over twenty best-sellers later, she teaches Shakespeare in the English Department at Fordham University in New York City. She's also the mother of two children and, in a particularly delicious irony for a romance writer, is married to a genuine Italian knight.
