RT-TOP PICK
After Jean-Claude Laroque, aka Le Diable, becomes the dictator of the African country of Ubasi, the CIA is worried. The private military company Force du Sable is hired to evaluate the situation, and Dr. Emily Carlin is sent to Ubasi to determine what will happen in the region if Jean-Claude is overthrown. From the moment their eyes meet, there's an instant connection, but subterfuge is a must. When Emily finds out what Jean-Claude's situation really is, will help arrive in time? With Seducing the Mercenary (4.5), part of her Shadow Soldiers series, Loreth Anne White sets in motion an intricate plot that's revealed layer by layer. Jean-Claude is a winner of a hero, and his complexity is painted in many shades. This is an enthralling story!

About the Author

Loreth Anne White was born and raised in southern Africa, but now lives in Whistler, a ski resort in the moody British Columbian Coast Mountain range. It's a place of vast, wild and often dangerous mountains, larger-than-life characters, epic adventure, and romance -- the perfect place to escape reality.

It's no wonder it was here she was inspired to abandon a 16-year career as a reporter, features writer, and editor (under the name Loreth Beswetherick) to escape into a world of romantic fiction filled with dangerous men and adventurous women.

When she's not writing you will find her long-distance running, biking or skiing on the trails, and generally trying to avoid the bears - albeit not very successfully. She calls this work, because it's when the best ideas come.

Loreth Anne White combines terrific writing with an imagination tempered by reality. Her stories leap off the page. As I read this six years after publication, I'm struck by how much of her tale has been underwritten by current events, making this fresh, vibrant and altogether believable. Her characters are rich, nuanced, slightly flawed [like the rest of us] and she hooks us early in her story with their wounds and dreams. We want them to succeed, to heal and to have their happy ending. And in the meantime, we sweat the details right along with them!

I personally love the way she gets to the heart of several social issues, while she tells her riveting story, getting me, and hopefully you, to care about making the world a healthier, happier, safer place to grow in. As a journalist who's lived on more than one continent, she has the experience, combined with deep observational skills, to bring cultures alive for us and to imagine for us that bridging differences is possible. But all of this plays out subliminally while we enjoy a rousing good story, one that opens our mind as it tugs on our feelings.

If you haven't picked up this novel of Ms. White's; if you're not usually a fan of happy endings, do yourself a favour; take a break, read this well-crafted, rip-roaring story and see if you don't come back for more of this author's work.

The book was done, the last page read and yet I sat there holding it in my hands, unwilling to let it go. The sounds of the neighborhood slowly emerged from the jungle in my mind; I had been so engrossed that they had been shoved back into the shadows of Ubasi. Usually when I like a book, I jump up immediately and write the review; but not this time. I want to savor the feelings that still pour through me; its story holds me in its grip. What to say, how to articulate the sensations brought on by Emily/Emma and Jean's story; the emotions that still hold me tight. Ms. White has the ability to transport you into the world of her characters. I highly recommend this book.
