1.0 out of 5 stars If You Want Steamy or Great Storyline, You Won't Find It Here
There just weren't any real stand out characters in this book for me. The two main characters are poorly fleshed out (as is the story line). I didn't feel I knew them at all and therefore, I couldn't care for them either. No being ga-ga for the hero, no rooting for the heroine, no laugh out loud moments or tugging at your heart-strings. It's just not there...

5.0 out of 5 stars great paranormal historical romance, March 8, 2009
This review is from: Seducing a Scottish Bride (Mass Market Paperback)
Following the death of his second wife Ronan "The Raven" MacRuari vows no more marriages. He fears for the life of any future bride at his home Castle Dare as he believes he is either paranormally cursed or haunted by an unknown mortal adversary with access to his home; though he leans towards the supernatural because the natural explanation means a friend or family member has been killing his wives.

However, the twice widower is placed in a quandary when he must marry a MacKenzie to pay off a family debt to the clan. Laird MacKenzie sends a euphoric Lady Gelis to be The Raven's third bride. She has the gift of sight and has seen her intended in a vision. She prepares to bring sunshine into his heart while confronting the dark forces of evil who need her dead in order to possess the Raven Stone that MacRuari owns.

SEDUCING A SCOTTISH BRIDE is a great paranormal historical romance starring two caring individuals whose love puts them at odds with each other. He would rather be celibate than place his Lady Gelis in harm; she would rather battle the entire forces of hell than give up her love. Fans will read this in one delightful sitting so set aside the time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Historical Romance!, February 24, 2009
This review is from: Seducing a Scottish Bride (Mass Market Paperback)
Author Sue-Ellen Wellfonder made frequent trips to the land of her dreams due to her twenty year career with the airlines. Bi-lingual, she flew international all those years, working her flights as foreign language speaker. Her flying career allowed her to see the world, but it was always to Scotland that she returned. Now a full-time writer, she much prefers wielding a pen to pushing tea and coffee. Proud of her own Hebridean ancestry, she belongs to two clan societies: the MacFie Clan Society and the Clan MacAlpine Society. Other titles include: Master of the Highlands , Knight in My Bed, Bride of the Beast, Only for a Night, Wedding for a Knight, Until the Night Comes, and Devil in a Kilt. She is married and currently resides with her husband in Florida .

Lady Gelis MacKenzie yearns for love, the everlasting kind. Her father, hesitant to all suitors, is determined to keep her close and at home. Until a long-standing debt is called upon to be collected, and her father's honor must obey it. Gelis has already had a vision of her suitor, a darkly seductive man, with wounds that run deep. When she finally meets her betrothed and learns of his family's curse that has haunted them for generations, she determines that curses are not to be believed. With two previous wives in the ground, Ronan MacRuari, known also as the Raven, weds Gelis only to satisfy his clan. He knows that loving her could unleash the curse and put her in mortal danger. But as he comes to know her, and their passionate desires flare, he begins to wonder if Gelis isn't the key to lifting the curse that has plagued them. Determined to protect her at all costs, he'll fight the dangerous forces that threaten her, even if it means closing off his heart to what it truly wants.

The only issue I had with the book was this curse. Well, not the curse itself, but the explanation of it. It was given in bits throughout the story, but I still don't feel any closure in fully understanding it. This is part of a series, I believe, so it is possible that it is further explained better in one of the other books.

The plot flowed well and I adored the characters. I loved the side-story with the secondary characters, Anice and Hugh, too. This was a great mix if historical and paranormal romance. The setting and her depiction of it was superb. Now I want to go to Scotland !

If you are seeking a one-of-a-kind romance, full of action and steam, pick up Seducing a Scottish Bride, by Sue-Ellen Wellfonder!

It's just not there.

Sometimes it's the title of the book that makes you want to buy but this title is misleading in that the hero never seduces the heroine, he doesn't have to because there's no real conflict of any consequence between them. In fact you will be 300+ pages into this 364 page story before the hero actually beds his "bride". If I remember correctly there are about 3 kisses, the bedding and about half another intimate scene and that's all you get. I wouldn't have minded at all at the lack of "steamy moments" if there had been a better build up of sexual tension but that was missing for me.

There is the one scene at the very end of the book that was semi-exciting when the hero confronts his foe(s) but that doesn't save the story, at least for me.

This author consistently gets good reviews and has deserved them but unfortunately, I didn't feel this book stood up well to her past efforts.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Real Disappointment !!, July 17, 2009

I have enjoyed many of Sue-Ellen's previous Scottish Romances but after trying to read though the first 300 boring pages I gave up looking for any romance in this book. The "plot" was centered around visions, curses, second sight, demons, magic, etc. etc. The two main characters had no warmth, personality, vitality or depth.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs more pratice seducing, February 24, 2009
This review is from: Seducing a Scottish Bride (Mass Market Paperback)
Lady Gelis MacKenzie is an heiress. She is one of the most beautiful and headstrong heiress to live in the highlands. Gelis may be an heiress but she is just like every other woman and in the fact that she is looking for love. Gelis ends up dreaming of a dark haired man, who she believes is her true love.

Ronan MacRuari is cursed and so because of this he won't marry again. He has just recently buried his second wife. Ronan is also known as the Raven. This is because of his dark hair. Too much of Ronan's disappointment, he learns that he is to be married for the third time to Lady Gelis. He tries to get rid of Gelis by warning her of his curse. Gelis does not believe in curses. She is determined to prove to Ronan that she is the woman for him. Who knows, like the saying says "The third time's the charm"!

I really enjoyed Gelis. She is charming to everyone, kind and was willing to put up with all of Ronan's crap. I could see why all of the ladies wanted Ronan. He is tall, stocky and a great protector. Seducing a Scottish Bride is book seven in this series. The good part is that you do not have to read the rest of the books to enjoy this story. This book is a quick read. You could tell that author Sue-Ellen Welfonder really enjoys her historicals. I am adding Sue-Ellen Welfonder to my list of authors to keep reading.

I have read many of this authors book and though it wasn't my favorite book it was decent. I read it quickly for a light weekend read. If you like her other books and her style of writing you will enjoy this one also.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed..., September 28, 2009
This review is from: Seducing a Scottish Bride (Mass Market Paperback)
Over all it was good but certainly slow in places. If you stick with it through those times and there are several, then you're ok. But the ending wasn't what I had expected. A little disappointed with the Epilog.

Ronan MacRuari finds himself betrothed to the fiery-spirited Gelis, daughter of the Black Stag of Kintail, Duncan MacKenzie, when his grandfather propositions Duncan to pay back a debt inquired years past by giving his youngest daughter to the Raven, Ronan MacRuari. Thinking it best to keep her at a distance in hopes she leaves the blighted, cursed land his clan occupies, he attempts to deny her. He fears her fate will be no different than his two previous wives...an early death due to the curse he and his clan carry upon their shoulders.

But the stubborn lass refuses to see things as Ronan does, not after discovering she has the same Second Sight as her mother, Linnet. After having a vision of the Raven, Ronan MacRuari, she is determined that she is the one to save him and his clan from the evil that haunts them. He needs her and she will have it no other way.

The mystery of the curse upon the MacRuaris slowly unfurls throughout the story, but you don't really know until the end. I enjoyed that bit of crypticness that carried throughout the book. I think Sue-Ellen writes such wonderful descriptions of the land of Scotland. The heather strewn hills. The mist clouded Lochs and mountains. The life she breaths back into the castle ruins of today, giving them back the life they had in their time of greatness. I love reading her books because you can feel how much that land means to her. She always adds a bit of lore that I find interesting. I enjoy reading her books for more than the romance, I love being swept away to that medieval time.
