Having been a Sparks fan since the days of the brilliant albums "Kimono My House" & "Propaganda" (1974), I've followed them through relative ups (the entire 70's output) and downs (the 80's disco-oriented output, from which they fortunately pulled back) and purchased pretty much everything they've produced.

When the new album The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman came out, I was taken aback a bit - the release was in two forms, both import vinyl, and very expensive.

There's a "regular" 2LP edition and the "Limited Edition", consisting of 4LPs and (yea!) a CD. The two extra LPs in this Limited Edition consist of the entire work as a Swedish Edition.

Well, I finally found a "reasonable" price (still expensive, but not into the stratosphere) on the Limited Edition (from a trusted Amazon Marketplace seller), and I'm so glad I did - I'm just blown away by the quality of this work.

This is, by far, the most "progressive" of the Sparks' output - they've really extended their reach in a wonderful way. This is a musical (not a "rock opera"), orchestrated beautifully, with a very talented Swedish cast of singers and players. The orchestration melds smoothly and logically with the "rock" bits, and the story is quite quirky and interesting, as one would expect from the Sparks.

The story line is a fictional account of acclaimed Swedish movie director Ingmar Bergman as he navigates the cynical world of Hollywood after being drawn in by the lure of having enough money to make the movies he really wants to make - and the price he must pay in artistic and personal integrity to do so.

The parade of colorful characters is accompanied by the ever-changing musical landscape. My attention was firmly held and rewarded throughout.

I'm extremely impressed with how far the Sparks have progressed with this work, and so glad to see them not only survive, but prosper.

Viva Sparks!

Not only is this a briliantly designed deluxe boxset, but it contains one of the most important works in recent pop music history. It's a classy, sophisticated musical by the enigmatic Sparks' brothers Ron and Russell Mael. Having taken the crown for producing the most original pop music bar none, Sparks have now gone one step further and composed a musical centering on a 'what if?' fantasy scenario about celebrated Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman. The album combines ground-breaking pop, orchestral, minimalist and over-the-top compositions, all done with the sophisticated lyrical slant that we have come to know from Sparks.
Forget about any previous distaste for musicals: this is modern music making at its finest. Sparks lead the way yet again.

When I look back at Sparks' lengthy career, I can't come up with one other band who have consistently upheld the same level of quality. With Ingmar Bergman, their most ambitious, least commercial work ever, Ron and Russel have produced a piece of musical brilliance that seems to be what they were working for all along. It rewards repeated listening. The brief Swedish dialog does not distract and is easily understood in context

Well worth the price.

I was very impressed by this opus! Wow! I purchased a double vinyl version, the vinyl is great, the sound is incredible!
The music is something! I am very picky but this conceptual album amazed me! I wish it was longer... It feels like you want to listen that album over and over again... I hope they will do some kind of sequel.
Bravo!
