About the Author

Colette Moody has long been an avid bibliophile and fan of history (and swashbuckling). When she isn’t doing research or crafting scenes for her next romp of a novel, she can be found doing one or more of the following: trying to best her high score on Wii Tennis; sequestered in the kitchen eagerly trying to prove that everything DOES taste better with bacon; meticulously recreating classic cocktails from the 30s and 40s; or planning her next trip to Disneyland. While waiting to be generously (and inexplicably) remembered in some wealthy stranger’s will, she begrudgingly bides her time as a corporate lackey, working for the man. She lives in Southeastern Virginia with her beloved dog and her equally Wii-addicted partner.

More About the Author

Colette Moody is an avid fan of history and politics. When she isn't doing research or crafting scenes for her next romp of a novel, she can be found doing one or more of the following: watching classic films; sequestered in the kitchen eagerly trying to prove that everything DOES taste better with bacon; meticulously recreating cocktails from the 30s and 40s; or planning her next trip to Disneyland.

By day, her alter ego toils at what she fondly refers to as her "crap job." She lives in Virginia with her very naughty dog and her only slightly less naughty partner of 10 years.

The story takes place during Prohibition and the Golden Age of Hollywood. So the quick, witty dialogue is appropriately bawdy and risque. The action begins in New York City then travels by train to Hollywood.

Moxie is a singer in a speakeasy and Violet is a Broadway actress. It's love at first sight but Violet is headed to Hollywood. She is eventually joined by her whole hedonistic entourage. Each and every member of this group is most certainly a 'character'. They are eccentric and over-the-top. You'll love every one of them! Their snappy repartee is hilarious. The highlight of the book is their raucous train ride from NYC to LA.

The author is to be commended for perfectly capturing the lingo of the 1930's and for her knowledge of intoxicating beverages. She even includes an appendix with several recipes for the cocktails mentioned in the book. All this, plus a happy ending!

I definitely recommend this entertaining, fun, easy read.

This book is a bit difficult to rate with stars because there are a couple things at odds. The story is fun and the writing is good, but a bit more care should have been taken with the period aspects. In the end I rated it with 4 stars for the writing, which won out over detail problems.

I really enjoy Colette Moody's writing and The Seduction of Moxie doesn't disappoint in that regard. The characters were lively, colorful, and interesting. The time period that serves as the backdrop is fascinating and in many ways is brought vividly to life in this book.

But there are a few problems that, had they been addressed, would have turned this from a good read into an excellent book. Some of the banter and lingo is right on. But some anachronistic slang and colloquialisms detract from the experience. The example I can remember off the top of my head is "hinky", which was used several times, but it didn't come into use until the 1950s. This sort of thing is important in a period piece. In other cases it's not the use of specific words, but how they are strung together that comes across as anachronistic.

The dialogue is often raunchy and vulgar. I'm no prude in this regard and some well-placed zingers can be fun and highly humorous. However, I think such talk needs to be used judiciously or it loses the beneficial effect intended. In this case I think Moody overdid it. At times it seemed she was writing vulgar chat just to see how vulgar she could get and it became its own goal, instead of a means to an end like it should be.

Another issue that caused me some problems was that the characters are all struggling artists of one sort or another. Yet somehow they can afford to travel in first class cross-country on a train in private cabins.

My wife's friend left this book while visiting. Curious, I bagan reading it and haven't put it down till I was finished. This book is one of the best and funniest books I ever read. Each of the characters stood out in 3D and I have to admit that I'm in love with Voilet London. She's someone that I can sit and talk to all day. The daiolog was crass and risque and hilarious. The sex scenes were very mature and adult without being porographic. I would like to hope that there's a seqeul or even a pre-qeul featuring Voilet London. I would gladly read either or both.

An over all, good book. In some areas, fantastic. I could not put the novel down until finished reading. Sections of dialog were hilarious, and I enjoyed the story very much. A shout out to Andy for highly suggesting this novel, and to "Cocktail Hour" for having Colette Moody as a guest author. I would actually rate this novel, four and a half stars, if I could. This is a novel I will enjoy reading over and over. I highly recommend buying a copy! ♥

I absolutely loved this novel. It was extremely funny throughout. Violet is one of the most fun characters ever. i felt like I was with the characters through the journey, rather than just reading about them. The love story was very sweet. The only real negative I have is just a personal preference in books I read, the love scenes were a little skipped over. They were not what I call "fade to black" like some books but they weren't as descriptive as I prefer. I do recommend it, highly. You'll have fun going on the journey with this wonderful group of characters you grow to love.
