5.0 out of 5 stars a must-have book, May 22, 2001

This review is from: Seductive Caress (Paperback)
In 1888, the worst place to be in England is London's East End... Jack the Ripper's hunting ground. That's where Jessaymn Forsythe is determined to go after receiving a disturbing letter from her missing sister, Lenore. Why is she staying with a woman named Annie Chapman? Why is she going by the name of Mary Kelly? Why is Lenore hiding? Disguised as a woman of limited means, Jessaymn leaves high society behind and makes her way to Whitechapel. There she meets Inspector Devlin Burke. An arrogant Irishman who has pulled himself up from the streets he now patrols. He's handsome, ruthless, and carries a chip on his shoulder the size of a log cabin. Abandoned at birth by an aristocratic mother, Devlin feels only contempt for the upper class. As time passes, Devlin becomes more and more suspicious of Jessaymn. She doesn't seem to belong in Whitecapel. She speaks too elegantly to be from the lower class, not to mention being able to read and write. Who has time for anything but survival in the East End? Jessaymn is hiding something and Devlin is determined to find out what it is. Although Jessaymn comes from a wealthy family, she is rich in her own right. She has achieved the status of a famous painter by using a man's name to protect her identity. Against Devlin's wishes, Jessaymn assists the police by sketching drawings of the killer from eyewitness accounts. When her sketches circulate around Whitechapel they catch the attention of Jack and force Devlin to keep an even closer eye on Jessaymn. Fighting their mutual desire for each other, Devlin and Jessaymn can only hope that they find Jack before he finds them. This book takes the actual case of Jack the Ripper and shows his victims as more than numbers in a body count. Get this book as soon as you can. I hope you enjoy Devlin and Jessaymn's romance as much as I did. This is a page-turner that you won't be able to put down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical Romance + Suspense = a darn good read, August 10, 2010
This review is from: Seductive Caress
Seductive Caress proves the saying "never judge a book by its cover" is all so true. What a pleasant surprise, SC is the best romance book I have read so far this summer. If you are tired of sex driven plots with cookie cutter characters, Lords and Ladies, big misunderstandings and authors that rather tell you a story instead of letting the reader experience it as it happens, look no further than Carla Simpson's Seductive Caress.

Jesse a wealthy young woman is looking for her sister that has disappeared without a trace. One day Jesse receives a coded letter from her sister that lets her know all is not what it seems and that danger is just around the corner. The only clue to her sister's hiding place is the letter that was posted from the Whitechapel area of London . Jesse leaves her privilege life behind, disguising herself as a plain working girl and begins her search to find her sister amongst the squalor and poverty of Whitechapel. Upon her arrival she immediately seeks the help of the police which leads her to Inspector Devlin Burke. Devlin is working on the case of a lifetime; he is tracking a serial killer and fears he will be too late to stop the next killing. Devlin tries to direct Jesse to another Inspector until he realizes they both might be looking for the same person that could lead him to the killer.

Carla Simpson's writing is superb; she takes the reader into the story by writing vivid descriptions of life in the Whitechapel area of Victorian era London . You can feel the fog against your skin and hear the clip clop of the horse's hooves as they pull carts down cobbled alleyways. Although the H/h was from different backgrounds they were well matched. Jesse and Devlin both had some hard lessons to learn about each other and we were allowed to watch it happen. The supporting cast of characters added credibility to the time and place of the story. I stayed up all night to finish this book and was not disappointed. Seductive Caress is 1 part romance and 1 part suspense. There is sex but it knows its proper place and did not occur until after the story was fully established. I highly recommend this book.
