Book Description

October 6, 2008

Anyone can catch a sexually transmitted disease. STDs are widespread in all walks of life, regardless of gender, race, social status, or education. Seduced into complacency by the notion that "it can’t happen to me," many sexually active teens and young adults are stunned when they are diagnosed with an STD.

To drive home the risks and realities of unprotected sex, Dr. Jill Grimes narrates real-life stories of young people infected with STDs. The accounts of these young men and women, and their exam-room conversations with their doctors, evoke both the physical symptoms and the emotional reactions that can accompany infection.

Dr. Grimes introduces each disease with a pair of stories that capture the distinct experiences of a man and a woman, in the process allowing readers to identify and empathize with such patients. The stories are followed by an information section that provides medical facts and answers to frequently asked questions about symptoms, treatment, and prevention.

Whether reading the book from cover to cover or jumping directly to a specific disease, readers will relate to the dramatic stories while learning medically reliable information to help them make decisions about life and love.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that one in four teenage girls in the United States has a sexually transmitted disease. Seductive Delusions reveals what physicians across America see every day. Anyone who is sexually active is at risk and needs to read this book.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Grimes debunks the 'seductive delusion' that people cannot catch STDs if they choose the 'right' partner in a readable and well-organized book.

(Library Journal 2008)

The unique style of this book is likely to gain the attention and interest of the target audience... Certainly this is a novel approach and I will wholeheartedly recommend this book to patients and students in health professions wishing to get a foundation in STDs.

(Ameeta E Singh, BMBS, MSc Doody's Review Service 2008)

While probably not recreational reading, the book is a good gift for the teen in your life that just might be contemplating getting into a relationship (sexual or not).

(Sacramento Book Review 2009)

Read the book from cover to cover... knowledge is power.

(Healthbolt.net 2009)

I would highly recommend this book to all sexually active young people. It is eye-opening and disturbing in the right sort of way.

(www.getbetterhealth.com 2009)

[Grimes] enthralls us with gripping tales of real people facing illness and tragedy. And the kick comes with how she wisely brings the reader to be motivated to avoid the infectious danger that is truly out there. (I'm getting copies for my kids.)... SHOULD be a required textbook for all High School health classes.

(Richard P. Holm, MD National Association of Medical Communicators 2010)

Anyone who is sexually active is at risk of contracting an STD. By sharing these very real experiences of people you and I meet every day, Dr. Grimes shows how everyday people can contract one of these preventable diseases. Everyone, including physicians, can learn from the stories in this book.

(Robert E. Rakel, M.D., Baylor College of Medicine 2009)

From Luke to Liz, from Meredith to Mitch, the people in this book could be anyone you know—including you. Because you like them and identify with them, you begin to believe, for real, that you, too, might get an STD and suffer the consequences. Every young person who is having sex or thinking about having sex should read this book.

(Diane F. Clark, R.N., Family Life Educator, Chesterfield County, Virginia 2011)

Dr. Jill Grimes has found an innovative way to connect with young people. By telling the stories of everyday people, she speaks to a sizeable population who assumes that because they don’t fall into a traditionally defined 'risk' group, they are not at risk for STDs.

(Ellen Friedrichs, sexedvice.com 2011)

What do teenagers, soccer moms, CEOs, and medical students have in common? Each is at risk of contracting an STD. Seductive Delusions illustrates the stories behind sexually transmitted disease statistics, giving faces and emotions to these contagious infections. Don't be surprised if you find yourself thinking, 'That sounds like me!' Dr. Grimes gives us the much needed reality check and the necessary information to prevent us from becoming a character in Seductive Delusions.

(Ashley Wietsma, writer of the Johns Hopkins Newsletter column "Orgasmic Chemistry" )

[My] students reported that the stories of people like them made sexually transmitted diseases seem more real and the stories stuck with them much better than hearing just facts and stats

(Patty Amidon, Coordinator of Health & Peer Education, Alfred State College )

Highly recommended.

(Linda Carlson PEP Talk )

This is [a book] we whole-heartedly recommend for adolescents, their parents and teachers.

More About the Author

Jill Grimes, MD, practices family medicine in Austin, Texas. She is a clinical instructor for UMASS Medical School through an innovative internet-based ethics course for medical students. Dr. Grimes is passionate about all types of preventative medicine- from nutrition to sexually transmitted diseases. She'd much prefer to help her patients lose weight and create healthy life habits than add on more prescriptions to treat their high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes, and she practices what she preaches.

Dr. Grimes loves creating and thinking outside the box- whether it's in medicine or in her role as a girl scout leader or mother. She and her daughters have been involved with scouting for seven years (not counting Dr. Grimes' own scouting days as a youth.) Favorite badge work? Anything with a craft or outdoor activity, or a combination such as creating a pressed flower collection during a fun hike. The Grimes family loves to be creative in the kitchen as well, always on the quest for a new fruit smoothie.

Pet peeve? Fast-food medicine! We need to stop popping pills for problems that life style modifications will solve. Medicines are wonderful and necessary, but let's use them as either a temporary or at least second-line solution.

Dr. Grimes wrote Seductive Delusions-how everyday people catch STDs, to try a different approach to STD education. We have plenty of accurate data and educational handouts out there, but real stories impact with far more power. Most people believe STDs lurk in dark corners of our society, but any primary care physician will tell you the population they treat includes successful, educated men and women across the board!

5.0 out of 5 stars Risky Business-- Straight talk about a touchy topic, October 20, 2008

As a parent of a college student, I think ALL parents should get this book for their guys and girls. It's a MUST read for them now, and would've been great to have in those earlier H.S. years as well. This book makes it clear exactly when, how, and why people who are not promiscuous are catching STDs. This is NOT a boring textbook lecture on STDs, it reads like a story, featuring smart, educated young people who look, act and talk like your teen (or 20 or 30-something). What our kids consider "low risk" activities (you may or may not know what those are) actually still transmit diseases - with or without sex (who knew?) and with or without condoms! Whether you think your son/daughter is sexually active now or will be anytime soon, even and perhaps especially if it's with their future spouse, Seductive Delusions is a MUST HAVE so that you and they know what his/her real risks are! YIKES! P.S> I'm now buying copies for my single, adult friends too (it's a jungle out there)

5.0 out of 5 stars A very sobering book, March 2, 2009
Sexually transmitted diseases (or STDs for short) are a nearly taboo subject in modern American culture, which is very strange considering how sexually-liberated it is. Many Americans, especially younger Americans, have gone through some sort of sex education, and they know more than pervious generations about human sexuality and sexually transmitted diseases. In spite of all that, many people have a lot of misconceptions about STDs.

In this very educational book, Dr. Jill Grimes, experienced family physician, uses the medium of story telling to drive home the risks and realities of unprotected sexual activity. She covers seven STDs in this book: herpes, human papilloma virus, cervical cancer, chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, pubic lice, HIV, hepatitis C, and Syphilis. Each of the STDs is covered in two stories (one in the case of cervical cancer), explaining about the disease through a conversation between a man and a woman and their doctors. After that is a fact sheet and FAQ on the disease.

This is a very sobering book, one that addresses a subject that we would rather not talk about, but really must. I think that it is extremely informative, and really should be read by just about everyone. Don't wait to get the sad news from your doctor, be proactive and read this book!

Seductive Delusions: How Everyday People Catch STD's, is a must-read for anyone who is dating or thinking of dating. Whether you are a teenager contemplating a relationship, or re-entering the dating scene, you will find this book informative and helpful. Read it cover-to-cover, or use it as a reference. It is clear, accurate, up-to-date, and thorough. It gives you the information you need without boring statistics or off-putting lectures. The real-life stories draw you in. I have bought this book for relatives in high school and middle school as well as those who are re-entering the dating world. Dr. Grimes tackles the "unmentionables" with grace and tact. I wish each of my patients had this information before they started a new relationship.
