Book Description

Charlie is a passionate, sensually inspired art student, desperately seeking an escape from an abusive past that haunts her and a tragic accident that emptied her heart. Scarred and unable to love, her yearning for physical pleasure and contact leads her into a tantalizing, dangerous world of power and seduction. The anonymity of the deal offers security, the money provides financial freedom, and the madam’s authority is the mother figure she longs for.

But the thrill of the mansion and its arousing dominance quickly fades when she meets the renowned yet mysterious Cameron Hardy, whose intense, baby blue eyes send a nervous flutter through her core. He’s sexy, and not in a subtle way. Cameron stimulates her art, intellect and desires. Just as he begins to break through her emotional boundaries, Charlie discovers a devastating connection between her past and her scandalous work at the mansion, shattering everything she thought to be true.

Provocative, intoxicating and erotic, Seductive Shadows is the unforgettable tale of a young woman’s discovery as she learns to forgive, to love and be loved, and to find redemption amidst a memorable journey that will captivate your mind and stimulate your soul.

This book is for mature audiences. It contains explicit language and sexual content.

Editorial Reviews

"This story delves deeper into the main character's emotional and inner struggles and is much more than just another erotic book.  As a reader, you always try to guess what the secret is, or what's going to happen next, but with this one, I was wrong every time!  If you like to read books that have more complex issues then get ready for a hell of a ride." - Tiffany at Literati Literature Lovers

"From the first few pages, I was drawn into Charlie's story. Marni Mann created a character that is flawed yet desired; strong yet needs others to lean on; talented yet scared.  This is a book that will draw you in, make you cry, make you angry, make you sad but will have you rooting for Charlie." - Wennie at I Heart Books

"A great story behind the title and the main reveal will leave you talking about it for days. When I found out what was going on my jaw hit the freaking floor. The author did an amazing job keeping me on edge and trying to figure out what was coming next." - Donna at My Sticky Pages

"It was dark and gritty, with a sensuality that demands you to keep reading. Mann slowly unfolds Charlies past and present making you feel her pain and numbness. Mann's writing is perfect! I found myself not wanting the story to end! I highly recommend this book!" - Ashley at Book Nerd

"This book far exceeded my expectations - I was so drawn in. Charlie is an unlikely heroine. I loved that about her. She was not some innocent virgin waiting to be taken and protected by some strong man." - Books Books Books Blog

"The sex was naughty, the mansion a mystery, the multiple plot twists unpredictable- Seductive Shadows kept me turning the pages into the wee hours of the morning." - The Book Bar

I wasn't a prostitute; I was an artist who used her fingers to paint a fantasy that her body fulfilled. And when I was desired by men, I felt the most creative.

I had pondered the consequences of working at the mansion during Victoria's interview, and I did again as I lay in my own bed in the early hours of the morning. Would it be so horrible to be paid to have sex? Being hired to provide pleasure didn't mean I couldn't enjoy every moment of passion and every uninhibited, deviant thought. I craved sex and attention; I needed it. I was turned on by the cameras that would point toward my bed, by the lust that would be whispered in my ears, and by playing out the fantasies that I would compose. The challenge would make my release so much sexier. And if one of the clients tried to hurt me, Victoria would be there for my protection, to stop him before he went too far.

Not knowing anything about these men--their names, or even what the top half of their faces looked like--meant they also knew nothing about me. I would never have to discuss my past or the accident; the only thing I would have to unzip would be my lingerie. I would have enough money to pay off my mother's debt in a reasonable amount of time, take more than one class a semester, and because her disability checks would stop once she died, I wouldn't have to find a roommate to cover the remainder of the rent. I could get lost in the sex; I could escape, even if it was for just a brief period of time. I could forget.

5.0 out of 5 stars Holy smokes . . . what a read!! July 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Seductive Shadows by Marni Mann
Source: ARC/Author for a fair and honest review
Rating: 5/5 stars

When I got the email asking me if I would be interested in possibly reading and reviewing Seductive Shadows I was instantly drawn to the cover. My only concern after insta-loving the cover was could this book live up to the awesome of the cover. Oh hell yes, is the answer!

Marni Mann and her damn Seductive Shadows had me hooked at page one with Charlie on the train trying to control her intense desire to jump and shag the hot guy sitting across from her. Charlie's fantasies are prematurely interrupted by the insistent ringing of her phone and the loud complaints of her dying mother on the other end of the line. As she has for her entire life, Charlie sets aside her needs, wishes, and desires in order to care for her mother, a woman who really can't die soon enough. (Read the book dear reader and you will hate Lilly too.)

Up until she was a senior in high school, Charlie pretty much managed life with Lilly because of her best and only friend Emma Hunt. Emma was from a wealthy family who all but took Charlie in and raised her as their own. Charlie could manage her awful home life as long as she had Emma but all that changed the day Emma was killed in a horrific car accident. Because Charlie was driving, Emma's family turned on her completely and for five long years, it has been Charlie alone dealing with her mother. In order to cope, Charlie works nights at a hotel, she takes art classes during the day and when the need arises (and it does frequently) she indulges her sexual desires.

3.0 out of 5 stars This Book Reader Liked It But... July 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Rating: 3 - 3.5 stars

I had an extremely hard time rating this book. It was the kind of book that as I read it I couldn't decide whether I liked it or not, yet I could not put the book down.

Let me start with what I really liked about this book. The writing was phenomenal. Actually, I think this was my favorite part of the book and the reason why I could not put this book down. The author had a way of describing the scenes in a way that made you think she was painting you a picture. It especially came through when she was describing Charlie's paintings, which were dark yet powerful in their own right. Marni's writing had an artistic flare to it and it really kept my interest.

I also loved the concept of this book. The whole idea of this hidden mansion where Charlie went to explore her sexuality all while behind a mask was so fascinating. I loved the descriptions and different encounters that Charlie had. Marni did not glorify Charlie's "profession." At the beginning it was exactly what Charlie had needed, but towards the end of the book Charlie began seeing it and what she was doing for what it was.

Another thing I really enjoyed about the story was Charlie's art. I'll be honest, I'm not a big fan of art. However, I do have an appreciation for people who are passionate about it and use it as a way of expressing emotion. The paintings and the parts of the book where Charlie and Cameron were painting together were some of the best parts of the book for me. They weren't just some fodder to add to the story; they were integral to the story line.

The one thing that bothered me about this story though was Charlie herself. I could not connect with her. It wasn't that she wasn't written well or wasn't well developed.

2.0 out of 5 stars 2.5 stars. Okay but definitely had some issues. June 30, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Hrm. So I'm mixed on Seductive Shadows. It was one I liked but didn't love. Enjoyed parts and was left going what the ever living hell? over others. Loved the premise but not all the carry through and in the end was just left feeling kinda torn as a single choice late one night changes everything for Charlie and puts her life at risk.

Okay. So there's a lot going on in Seductive Shadows. Charlie--that's the heroine-- had a horrid childhood and is dealing with being the sole provider for her abusive mother as she's dying from cancer and is barely making ends meat at a night job. Then one night she's offered a chance to basically become a prostitute at a secretive mansion and be paid through the roof to be the play thing for men with dark tastes. And the girl jumps on it. Like...that! She loves sex. It's her escape. So why not be paid for what she craves.

::slow blink:: Well, okay then!

I was actually totally on board for the most part at this point. I was liking the set up, the taboo feel, the potential for some scorching and edgy sex, the struggle as Charlie straddled the line between being an art student, falling for her partner and caring for her mother and with her secret life and the warped views of sex and love she carries around that stem from her childhood.

And I was loving the men involved. Those in her secret life--a couple of the John's were rather interesting--and in her regular life. Charlie's art school partner Cameron...who is a wildly successful artist and encourages her. Treats her with respect and is just good for her and that she can't help but start falling for. And her friend Dallas who is there for her no matter what. Even when she really doesn't treat him with the same respect and uses him for an outlet for her sexual needs.
