Book Description

0071417214 978-0071417211 September 1, 2003 1

"A compelling text you will refer to over and over again."--Jane Browning, Executive Director, Learning Disabilities Association of America

"An excellent guide for parents... replete with concrete examples and information."--Dr. James Garbarino, author of Lost Boys and Parents Under Siege

Of the estimated 10 million U.S. students who struggle with learning to read, the vast majority are boys. Research shows that if these children do not "close the gap" before they finish third grade, they are likely to remain functionally illiterate throughout their lives. See Johnny Read! is the first book to offer practical, proven, and timely ways for parents to help their boys with this critical skill.

Written by an expert teacher and educational consultant, this much-needed book answers essential questions, including:

  • When does a reading delay become a reading problem ?
  • How, when, and where should I look for tutoring ?
  • How can I get the best help from the school ?
  • How can my son avoid (or overcome)the "Bad Boy" label ?
  • How can I help my son learn to read--and enjoy reading--at home ?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Parents Whose Child is Struggling to Read, October 20, 2003
By

This review is from: See Johnny Read! : The 5 Most Effective Ways to End Your Son's Reading Problems (Paperback)
This is a great book for parents whose child is struggling with reading.

In my experience, teachers are not prepared to offer guidance to parents whose child is having difficulty learning to read. "Just read 20 minutes a day", they say. The author, Tracey Wood, wastes no time getting right to the point, does your child have a reading problem? She then proceeds, with clearly written steps and advise, on how to teach your child to read. I wish I had this book back when my child was in the first grade!

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and Easy to use, December 8, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: See Johnny Read! : The 5 Most Effective Ways to End Your Son's Reading Problems (Paperback)
It's a great help for parents that are concerned that something needs to be done but aren't sure what to do. Don't wait - get this book and get started. I found the suggestions to be practical and easy to understand. I also really liked the real-life stories. The author obviously has a lot of experience and it was nice to know that other people have dealt with the same problems.

1.0 out of 5 stars I don't agree with these methods at all, June 13, 2005
This review is from: See Johnny Read! : The 5 Most Effective Ways to End Your Son's Reading Problems (Paperback)
I ordered a few books on how to help a child read, this was one of them. This book contradicts the info I gathered from my other sources (other sources made more sense), the format wasn't organized well, even if I did want to try Woods' methods, where would I start? I do not believe that a failing child needs to be sat down for a whole hour each day and be made to suffer through more instruction and homework at home! And out of nowhere, there is a paragraph on punishment...right after saying that praise is key, she says you may need to use punishment. For what, not being able to read? I didn't have the strength to muster on, this book was not a good resource, and boring to slog through. [...]
