5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Parents Whose Child is Struggling to Read
This is a great book for parents whose child is struggling with reading.

In my experience, teachers are not prepared to offer guidance to parents whose child is having difficulty learning to read. "Just read 20 minutes a day", they say. The author, Tracey Wood, wastes no time getting right to the point, does your child have a reading problem? She then proceeds,...

1.0 out of 5 stars I don't agree with these methods at all
I ordered a few books on how to help a child read, this was one of them. This book contradicts the info I gathered from my other sources (other sources made more sense), the format wasn't organized well, even if I did want to try Woods' methods, where would I start? I do not believe that a failing child needs to be sat down for a whole hour each day and be made to suffer...

She then proceeds, with clearly written steps and advise, on how to teach your child to read. I wish I had this book back when my child was in the first grade!

This review is from: See Johnny Read! : The 5 Most Effective Ways to End Your Son's Reading Problems (Paperback)
It's a great help for parents that are concerned that something needs to be done but aren't sure what to do. Don't wait - get this book and get started. I found the suggestions to be practical and easy to understand. I also really liked the real-life stories. The author obviously has a lot of experience and it was nice to know that other people have dealt with the same problems.

This book contradicts the info I gathered from my other sources (other sources made more sense), the format wasn't organized well, even if I did want to try Woods' methods, where would I start? I do not believe that a failing child needs to be sat down for a whole hour each day and be made to suffer through more instruction and homework at home! And out of nowhere, there is a paragraph on punishment...right after saying that praise is key, she says you may need to use punishment. For what, not being able to read? I didn't have the strength to muster on, this book was not a good resource, and boring to slog through. [...]

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent advise, well written., December 27, 2003

Tracey Wood is obviously pretty knowledgeable about reading difficulties and kids in general, but you also get the strong sense that she has a genuine liking for kids. I liked that I didn't feel preached at or condescended to, whilst at the same time she doesn't use much educational jargon. It was pitched exactly at moms with kids, and gave great practical suggestions for improving boys' reading - though I'm sure the program would be suited to girls too. I've started the exercises with my son, so far with fantastic results - can't recommend this book too highly!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great caring way to get your child to read now, October 28, 2003
This review is from: See Johnny Read! : The 5 Most Effective Ways to End Your Son's Reading Problems (Paperback)
This was a great book.Anyone that has a child that has trouble in school will find so much in this book that is helpful. It gives step by step guidance on how to find a tutor or how to be one yourself. It not only teaches you what to teach but how to teach too.Tracey Wood really cares about these kids and you can see it all throughout the book.I especially liked the section on when kids have troubles in school.Inattention and being a class clown are ways kids act out their difficulty with reading.I would definately recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A practical text that reads like a talk with a friend, February 20, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: See Johnny Read! : The 5 Most Effective Ways to End Your Son's Reading Problems (Paperback)
The title reflects the positive nature of this helpful text by a reading consultant. Follow her suggestions and you'll delight in seeing Johnny read. Practical suggesting include details about teaching sight words and phonics, working effectively with the schools, doing your own tutoring or selecting a tutor, dealing with behavior, and more.

I highly recommend using this book. I also highly recommend practicing sight words with Betsy B Lee's Funny Dolch Word Books and her book of Dolch horse stories, Albert.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fighting Literacy, January 14, 2004
This review is from: See Johnny Read! : The 5 Most Effective Ways to End Your Son's Reading Problems (Paperback)
Tracey Wood explains an ongoing epidemic in America, children developing reading problems. Wood provides strategies and resources for parents and teachers to find ways to solve a child's reading problem and help them to succeed in the classroom. As an educator, I see parents in denial over their child's reading woes. Thus, students seem not to be engaged in reading.

All too often, many parents deny that their child has a reading problem. This book will entail a parent to acknowledge that their son or daughter does have a reading or learning disability. Wood encourages them to be involved in their education. Like she says, a parental guidance equals success in life.

This is an excellent book for helping your child to read. I learned a lot from this book. I learned about the reading programs available at school for kids struggling with reading, how to get a tutor or be one yourself for your child, and what to teach during these tutoring sessions. Also, how to manage 'boy' issues. It has helped me working with my child, and I would highly recommend this book.
