Editorial Reviews

2012 release from the British Neo-Progressive Rock group. They play guitar-driven rock with the use of synthesizers to add depth and atmosphere, and an emphasis on melody.

I don't remember any Jadis album I dislike, and this case is not the exception.

After 6 years of hiatus, Jadis is back!

Gary Chandler and Steve Christey (a very good drummer if you ask me) returns now with two new cohorts: Arman Vardanyan on keyboards and Andy Marlow on a bass. The addition of these two fellows indeed contribute to a good soundwall for Gary's always melodic and strong riffs.

Vardanyan has moments in which his protagonism leads the songs with a very original trademark that makes clear he is not limited only to ambiance sounds

What it is a surprise for me is that this work is a sort of "back to the basis"; in terms of style and tempo. I was waiting for a continuance in the way Fanatic and Photoplay were made (a sort of straightforward tunes; with of course, great neo prog elements), but the outcome here are mild long tracks with the Jadis distinctiveness' lee way in the developing of their compositions with a more modern approach that recap so far, the evolution of the band through aprox three decades.

So, if you are a Jadis fan go ahead and get it ! and enjoy once again the Jadis magic !!

Hope this review helped you

After a six year stretch between studio albums, Jadis has returned! It feels good to say those words, as I've been following this band's career path since the early 1990s.

For the un-initiated, Jadis were a late entry in the progressive rock revival (AKA neo-prog) movement of 1980's England, coming a few years after the debuts of Marillion, IQ and Pendragon. However, over the years I feel like Jadis has become a distinctive musical entity that does't fit completely into any one 'movement'. I've sometimes heard their music described as "prog meets power pop" or "hook laden prog", and those are fairly good assessments. With most songs in the five to seven minute range, Jadis have crafted an unusual style of composition which can sometimes be quite lush, theatrical and adventurous, while somehow still remaining tuneful, concise & accessible. Attentive progheads will no doubt hear the little traces of Camel, Rush & Pink Floyd in their music, but the band members also acknowledge The Tubes, Crowded House & The Foo Fighters as influences. As for me, I just tend to hear a whole lot of Jadis in their music. Whatever the musical roots may be, the way in which they interpret & execute those influences is really quite unique.

As for a bit of history - Jadis' earliest efforts were a series of cassette-only releases between 1984 and 1988, followed by an independent, self-titled vinyl LP in 1989. However, they didn't come to the attention of most listeners (including myself) until their first CD release, "More Than Meets the Eye", issued by IQ's Giant Electric Pea label in 1992. In the years that followed, they released a consistently good string of studio albums; "Across the Water" (1994), "Somersault" (1997), "Understand" (2000), "Fanatic" (2003), and "Photoplay" (2006).

I was not impressed with this CD. I bought it because I have nearly every CD that Jadis has released and the price went low enough to try it. It seems to be just rehashing previous material - equal to the quality of "Somersault". I hate songs that repeat the same line over and over like this title track does. The best track is the instrumental.

Their best releases in my opinion are "Photoplay" and "More than meets the eye" - catchy tunes that challenge the imagination!
