Alternately amusing, enlightening, sad and inspiring--the charming documentary "See What I'm Saying" chronicles four deaf entertainers and how they pursue their artistic passions despite all obstacles. This isn't a warm and fuzzy film meant to elicit sympathy, however, but a strong portrait of never giving up. All four individuals highlighted in Hilari Scarl's vivid new piece have achieved some amount of success (or even stardom) in the deaf community--but translating that acceptance to the bigger stage of the hearing world poses unique challenges for those with hearing impairments. Scarl doesn't attempt to portray anyone as a victim or a hero, though. These are just ordinary performers who want to pursue their craft like anyone else with ambition, talent, and a dream. With frank interviews, "See What I'm Saying" opened my eyes to a subject I've never really considered before--but, make no mistake, this informative documentary is also wildly entertaining!

The four talented individuals who invited films crews into their lives for a year are comic CJ Jones, actor Robert DeMayo, singer TL Forsberg, and drummer Bob Hiltermann. CJ has achieved perhaps the greatest success in the deaf community and makes worldwide appearances as a celebrity. Yet, he still struggles to book regular acting gigs in Los Angeles. CJ experiences highs and lows that include a disastrous performance of his one man show and the triumphant staging of an international festival. Robert is the quintessential struggling New York artist and the film follows his travails that leave him struggling for financial survival. TL is an Evanescence style singer that gets a chance to cut her first CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deaf Culture October 3, 2011
I LOVED this movie!!!! I watched it on Netflix. I have been learning ASL with my family for many reasons: better communication (husband was born deaf), for my daughter's language requirement in her homeschool lessons, for cultural appreciation, and for the pure love of learning (especially a language!)

This movie has a LOT of signing in it, so I was able to see various ways of signing and learned new words (which is always great for me lol). It's captioned, so if I'm struggling to understand a segment of signing, I can pause, read what's being said and then resume to see how it's all put together. I can even rewind to review it and try to copy it, so I can learn to better my signing.

One aspect that I was really grateful was added into this documentary, they included how different deaf people heard the world as they were walking around for a brief time near the beginning of the movie. I loved this as it gives me perspective to the variations of deafness and how those variations can perceive sound.

It touched me deeply to see the struggles these HIGHLY talented people endure(d) - (and will continue to endure) in their careers. I LOVE that they keep at it and achieve their goals and keep going even after set backs and make new goals after successes!!!! This movie is immensely inspiring and by the end of the movie you're rooting for them all and I hope for updates!! I can't wait to see them perform again (in anything)!!

One thing I was able to personally connect with was TL - There is someone in my family who is hard of hearing - exactly as TL is and she's in out right denial about it... I hope she watches this and learns that it's ok to admit you need sign language and use it!!!!

Thank you all for putting this out here for us to view!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars See what I'm sayng May 12, 2011

First of all, this DVD is first rate. As a Deaf person myself, I completely related to these characters that were really struggling to make it in a hearing world. You're constantly being met with challenges that sorts of seems to be 'in your face' with the harshness of reality in the world when it comes to a disabilty. You're either put down for it, or pitied for it-and these 4 performers wouldn't have it. These 4 amazing Deaf performers somehow pave the way to thier dreams in an unstoppable way that says, "I'm not giving up" and they proved that you dont have to be hearing to really appreciate music, acting or stand-up comedy. Sure life's hard all around, especially when you have a disabiltiy, but this movie proves that if life tries to knock you down, you get back up and keep going until you reach that goal. The end of the film they rocked out a concert that makes all other rock concerts seem like nothing. 'Turn it up louder' is the ultimage phrase that seems to stay with me.
I seriously recommend it for anyone that may have a disabilty or know someone with a disablity, and it is even entertaining for the hearing too. Its a film that has a really good message and speaks to all walks of life. It embodies the spirit of life which makes the film irrisistable.

5.0 out of 5 stars See What they are saying about "See What I'm Saying" February 21, 2011
By Mackie
I saw this film during its theatrical run in NYC. This is an entertaining, moving and thought provoking documentary on an aspect of the entertainment world that most of us do not realize exists. Also the look into the culture of the hearing impaired is fascinating. Imagine to be not considered 'deaf enough' - or a mother who refuses to learn to communicate with her child!!!

I love that the entire film is captioned and never thought about the fact that most deaf people are excluded from going to movies. If for nothing else - this film deserves to be lauded for being the very first mainstream theater release to be fully open captioned for the hearing impaired. But it is enjoyable as a film with engrossing subject matter and fascinating people.
