Editorial Reviews

Josh Wilson returns with his highly anticipated new studio album, See You. Working with acclaimed producer Matt Bronlewee, See You features songs that are sure to inspire and challenge fellow believers. Much like Josh's previous hit singles "Savior, Please" and "Before The Morning," See You delivers songs like "I Refuse" and "Fall Apart" that are refreshingly honest and emotional while also lyrically and spiritually profound. Playing most of the instruments on the album himself, Josh also found ways to highlight what so many fans have come to love about him, his God-given talent as a one of a kind musician. Whether it be through an instrumental guitar loop or inviting family and friends to play/record their favorite kitchen utensil, Josh found ways to deliver a unique and commercial sound on See You that make this album one to watch.

His first single from the album, "I Refuse" is already connecting with radio listeners around the U.S. The song was inspired by a quote that touched Josh's heart and convicted him after a devastating flood hit Nashville, TN earlier this year - the quote simple says "I can't do everything but I Refuse to do nothing". Josh's prayer for the song is that as Christians we will refuse to do nothing and be Christ's hands and feet to the world.

Josh had me at "3 Minute Song." It is a clever song about the challenge as a Christian songwriter to bring Gospel truth into song lyrics, which he accurately describes as Trying To Fit The Ocean In A Cup. His follow-up album Life Is A Snapshot expanded on that concept with hit song "Before The Morning" and for me Josh hits on all cylinders with See You, which will certainly be one of my top albums of 2011.

The album opens with "Sing It," a gorgeous acoustic guitar ballad where Josh lays out the theme of this excellent album, "all the words in all the world could never say enough...nothing I could ever write comes close to Your glory...You've placed this song inside my heart and all I know to do for You is sing it." Josh's excellent musicianship and poignant lyrics continues with "Behind The Beauty," another standout hit song in my opinion with more words that connect with me personally, "sometimes the smallest things can make our hearts cry out the loudest." Lead single "I Refuse" challenges me to share my faith by helping those in need and not keep my faith to myself.

If music is the universal language, then Josh Wilson is a master linguist. Once again, Wilson produces a delectable masterpiece with his latest studio release, See You. The album's title track, "See You," talks about "seeing" the hands of God, even when they're not evident in the life's mire. The whole album, really, is about seeing God whether in the beauty of a new marriage, the devastation of a divorce, in the streets of India, or even in our own unbelief. Wilson takes the concept of seeing and provides a full emotional experience that is joyful, worshipful, gentle, heartbreaking, wild, and even playful.

From the first track "Sing It," a rallying cry to worship, to the last (a reprise of "Sing It"), See You is a fully developed album. Each song exists as a defining moment, yet one melody gives way to the next pulling See You's narrative along. "I Refuse," the album's first single, shows that inaction is unacceptable, calling listeners to make a positive mark on society. The poppy and playful "Always Only You" is a love song for Wilson's wife Becca while "Behind the Beauty" calls us back to the idea of "seeing" what God has created.

Something magical happens when Josh Wilson weaves word with sound and the result is See You, an album I cannot more highly recommend.

Before seeing Josh in concert with Matthew West & Lincoln Brewster, I didn't know he existed. My sister-in-law & I purchased CDs from each of the artists at the concert, but this 'See You' album is both our favorites. This is worth purchasing just for the song 'I refuse' which I believe he wrote after Nashville was deeply affected by flooding situations due to tremendous amounts of rain. LOVE this ALBUM! Shockingly, my 1st grader who generally doesn't get into music, also loves this album & sings along to the songs, so this music is for all ages! I would also recommend additionally purchasing one of his albums with his guitar solo 'Amazing Grace' on it. He played it at the concert & it was incredible & will be my next CD purchase. Listen to the clips, if you like any of them, you will love this CD!

On the recommendation of a friend, I picked up Josh Wilson's first CD three years ago. I immediately feel in love with his fun pop music and mix of fun and serious songs. Since then, he's released an EP that was more on the serious side. He's exploring the serious again with his second full length disc, See You. And I love it.

Don't get me wrong, the fun does still make a couple of appearances. Most noticeably, it shows up in "Always Only You." This upbeat song was written for his wife on their first anniversary. You can't help but smile as he sings about the horrid view from their apartment or how distracted he was the first time they held hands.

The whimsy shows up a little on "Behind the Beauty" as well as Josh describes things that can cause us to have hope. But he gets serious as he tries to point out the reason behind all the beauty around us, God. The booklet that comes with the CD provides a rather lengthy list of all the instruments that Josh Wilson played on this disc, and you can definitely hear the hammered dulcimer on this mid-tempo song.

But there's lots of serious stuff here. The first big single from the disc is "I Refuse." It's a commitment to go into the world and try to make a difference by sharing God's love in practical ways. It's a fun soft rock song that will make your toes tap from the very first moment.

There's also a great song about the power of words here. "Forest Fire" really draws on the analogy from James that compares careless words to a spark that sets an entire forest on fire. As bulling seems to be a more and more common story these days, it's a very timely reminder.
