5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant, stunning, absorbing!
This masterfully cast and rendered audio version of Fleischman's gorgeous vignette-novel features 13 different performers of various ages and ethnicities. Seed Folks is a good book. Its ok, I wouldn't say that its amazing but it is a good book. It is a good book to me because its as exciting as comic books, you know. My favorite chapter is the chapter about Kim, its my favorite chapter because Kim is honoring her dad by planting lima beans. She also started a garden in a nasty vacant lot & she didn't even know. Hope you like...

This masterfully cast and rendered audio version of Fleischman's gorgeous vignette-novel features 13 different performers of various ages and ethnicities. The fact that some of the readers are not professional performers gives the voices a ring of authenticity that is often missing from the "act-y" delivery of many audiobook readers (which I often find distancing). You are captivated by the natural, sincere delivery of these performers, who portray characters ranging from a very young Vietnamese girl to a Guatemalan man to an old, feisty Eastern European woman. The performances of the professional actors are so honest and convincing --particularly the Mexican teenager, young African-American man and the cowboy-like school janitor-- that they blend in seamlessly with the other voices. The story unfolds slowly, piece by piece, and by the very first chapter, you'll be hooked-- not only by Fleischman's wonderful writing, but by the musicality and vitality of each character's unique voice. A real treasure and high-quality product for all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for ESL, April 13, 2005
This review is from: Seedfolks (Audio CD)
This book is amazing! We are using it in Adult ESL classes in Chicago and the students won't miss class because they don't want to miss any of the story. One of the students came in tonight and told me he wants to buy it instead of reading from our copies. It fits so well because it describes the lives of people from other countries and because it is for middle-school aged children the students are able to follow the story. I highly recommend it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Seed Folks Review, February 13, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Seedfolks (Audio CD)
I thought Seed Folks was a very good book, because there were a variety of people and many different personality's in this book. This book was about these people who started in a lot filled with garbage. There are 13 characters in the book that plant things in the garden. Their names are Kim, Ana, Wendell, Gonzalo, Leona, Sam, Virgil, Sae Young, Curtis, Nora, Marcila, Amir and Florence. My favorite character is Curtis, because he finds a kid on the street and takes care of him. He also pays him to watch his tomatos while he's at work. Another character that I liked was Sae Young. She is very brave because, one day at her laundromat she is robbed, she's so scared after it that she won't leave her house. But one day she finally she leaves her house like she did before. Although there is one thing I didn't like. That was it didn't really tell you what happens in the end. Those were the things I liked and didn't like about the book.

SEED FOLKS

Seed folks is a very interesting book. Seed folks is about a young girl and her friends. The young girls father dies and she decides to plant bean seeds near a vacant lot. She wants to plant a little garden to remember her father. Once other people find out they decide to plant things to they end up planting things such as pumpkins and tomatoes. So if I was you I would take the time to read it!

This book tries too hard to be meaningful, diverse, and deep. If Fleishman hadn't put so much emphasis on it, the book would have been much better.
