More Distinctive Means Better,
By "coalblacksky@hotmail.com" (Tacoma, WA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Seeds (Audio CD)
The 2nd album from southern rock outfit Brother Cane has much of the same elements as their debut: bluesy wah-wah inflected riffs, "High Speed Freezin'"; tales of hard times and desolation, "Intempted"; and singer Damon Johnson's deep throated pain: "Voice Of Eujena." Here it's just done better and in a more distinctive style of a band finding their sound. A hint of grunge creeps in the haunting "And Fools Shine On" and the very AIC influenced "Rise On Water." This in no way lessens the impact of the material and the overall somber mood surrounding it. A solid second record from an underrated band.

Awesome Band, Dearly Missed,
By

I've loved this band from their start in 93", with their self titled album, "Brother Cane". I live about 100 miles north of Memphis, where Brother Cane originated, and I had the pleasure of seeing them live at the Pyramid (one of Memphis' best show arenas) with Van Halen (fronted by Sammy Hagar) as the headliner. Brother Cane was on thier "Seeds" tour at the time (about 1996). I'd have to say Brother Cane ROCKED THE HOUSE!!! Not many people could still stand up for Van Halen (although they still rocked equally). Unfortunately, Brother Cane split up after their third evenly matched release, titled "Wishpool", (although "Seeds" was still a cut above the other two albums). I would love to see Brother Cane make a reunion, as many of their fans would. They are dearly missed. They had a sound of thier own which is a mix of Collective Soul and Soundgarden/Audio Slave, with a little Nirvana grunge added for texture. This is a must have CD that sets an awesome mood at any gathering or just to rock on down the highway! TRY IT, YOU'LL LIKE IT!

One of the Best Surprises...EVER!,

Whenever I suggest this album to a customer at the music store I work at, they always purchase it after listening to it...and with good reason. This is one of the best rock albums of the 90's. You can compare it to Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Metallica...whoever- "Seeds" can stand up to any of them."And Fools Shine On" is a simple, catchy single that was heard on radio stations across the country, as well as in the movie Halloween 6. However, the album doesn't build around just that one song. Each track holds its own, and the album flows together beautifully. "Kerosene" is an excellent rocker with a great Damon Johnson riff. "Rise On Water," the strongest track on the album, highlights the strength of Johnson's emotional vocals and songwriting skills. "20/20 Faith" features another excellent guitar riff that very nicely flows into a low bass lick. "Voice of Eujena" is an excellent heart-filled ballad that whose guitar part was ever-so-cleverly borrowed by Marcy Playground on their debut album years later. This is one of the best albums made within the '90's. It is excellent, exciting, pure rock n' roll. Brother Cane would be far better known if the music industry were not dominated by one-hit wonder pop artists. Damon Johnson is a genius- that's why Ted Nugent hired him to lead the reunion of the Damn Yankees- which should be very interesting. If enough people hear what he can do, that will break through as "Seeds" should have. This album is essential for the collection of any rock fan- you will be as pleasantly surprised as I was!

Great, Lost Alabama Classic,
By New York Math Lover (NY, USA) - See all my reviews

Unfortunately with Brother Cane's hiatus, the fans aren't able to hear anymore the music that makes you sing along to the guitar and bass parts. This is one of the best things about Brother Cane's music. You are not only left humming Damon Johnson's lyrics, but you can't help but find yourself singing along to his guitar work, humming to Roman Glick's bass, all the while tapping out (or trying to!) Scott Collier's intricate patters. (I shoould mention that Scott Collier, with his extensive use of African percussion and his great licks and rhythms is one of rock's best drummers). Go out and buy this album!

Incredible followup to a great album,

Where many bands falter, Brother Cane shines. Their second effort is every bit as good as their first, with great rockers like "Hung on a Rope", "Kerosine", and "Breadmaker". Musically and lyrically this albums is an advance over their debue. This is shown especially on songs like "And Fools Shine On" and "Voice of Eugena". If you liked the first album you will love this one just as much, I really can't recommend this band enough, the best rock act to come out of the 90's.

Brother Cane only did two CD's, Seeds and WishPool. Seeds is the better of the two with track 3, "Fools shine on", the most recognized of all their tracks. If you like a good rock sound with great guitar then check out Seeds!

I heard the song "And Fools Shine On" from the motion picture Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers and fell in love with the sound of their music right away. I listened to the samples of the album on this page and ended up getting it for my birthday. All of the songs are equally great. Even though it is seven years old, the music sounds very great and Brother Cane could still be on top charts. I don't know if they are still making albums. I would recommend this CD to everyone. It is a CD with 90% rock, and 10% soft rock and other. It is great. Buy this CD! You won't be disappointed!

Seeds will probably do down as one of my favorite CD's of all time. There are so many great songs on this CD. Most people are familiar with "And Fools Shine On" which is reason alone to buy this CD. This should probably rank as one of the top 10 rock CD's of the 90's. Seeds is a great CD. It just rocks! Buy it, you will love it!
