I'd never tasted or even seen this type of tomato before but I decided to risk it and have a go at growing them even though I wasn't sure they'd grow in tropical Trinidad (some fruits/veg need a cold spell to grow well and we are pretty much around 32 degrees celsius all year round). In my opinion this tomato is all style with no substance.
As far as appearance is concerned this tomato rates a 5 in cuteness alone. It bears loads of inch long, chubby little pear shaped fruits. When fully ripened they are the color of the sun. They look wonderful in a salad, and add pizzazz to a side dish of mixed tomatoes. And let me assure you, if this was a...

I'd never tasted or even seen this type of tomato before but I decided to risk it and have a go at growing them even though I wasn't sure they'd grow in tropical Trinidad (some fruits/veg need a cold spell to grow well and we are pretty much around 32 degrees celsius all year round). They were very easy to germinate and grew well. I grew them in a large trough-type container, and the plants grew to about four feet tall. They are a bit lanky and do require staking or caging especially if you live in a windy area otherwise they will be blown over. I planted basil in with them to help keep away pests but I was still troubled by one pest - stinkbugs! I had to continually pick them off the stems of the plants but this is not unusual as I read that they are attracted to tomato plants. Luckily they didn't get a chance to do any damage to the plants or fruit because I got to them in time. Constant vigilance!

The tomatoes are very cute and look just like the photo. Because they are cherry tomatoes, they are small enough to pop in your mouth whole. I meant them for salads but I can't resist just eating them for a snack. None have made it into a salad yet! They turned out very sweet although I am not sure if that is their natural inclination or because I added baking soda to the soil from time to time. I read that the baking soda reduces acidity in tomatoes.

I highly recommend trying these!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best cherry tomatoes, December 17, 2008
This review is from: Seeds of Change S10997 Certified Organic Yellow Pear Cherry Tomato, 50 Seed Count (Lawn & Patio)
Good yields on large, sprawling vines. I reccommend a lot of support for this one, cause the only problem was it branched like crazy and some of the branches cracked where they joined to the main stem. They have really good flavor. Mild and sweet, almost too good to put in your salad. A good beginner's tomato.

I have grown yellow pear tomatoes off and on for years. They grow as long as you and the weather let them, and they grow taller and taller and wider and wider until it takes a lot of picking and eating to stay ahead of them. I'm the only one in the household who likes tomatoes, so it's just as well that I have a tendency to pop them into my mouth as soon as I pick them. However, an elderly (I'm 67, so I leave it to your imagination what age this man is) neighbor tells me his wife preserves them as she would berries. I can't imagine what they'd taste like that way, but if you want to try them go right ahead. This is an extremely good tomato for whatever you use it for, and I think it would make a good pizza topping, although I haven't tried that yet. I DON'T mean an element in a pizza saude; the taste isn't that robust. I mean sliced in half and placed on top of the pizza, just under the cheese which I put on top of everything else.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not That Flavorful, July 5, 2011
This review is from: Seeds of Change S10997 Certified Organic Yellow Pear Cherry Tomato, 50 Seed Count (Lawn & Patio)
And let me assure you, if this was a beauty pageant, Yellow Pear would be top 3 hands down.

But this isn't a beauty pageant.

So we look at the more important aspect of a tomato. The taste. The best thing I can say about the flavor of this little tomato is that it is mild. So mild in fact, one might say that it is totally flavorless. I have tried to find the flavor in this one but even salting with a high quality sea salt doesn't do it. In my opinion it is just a waste of the salt. More off putting for me was the texture of the fruits that grew on my plant. The only way I can describe it is mealy and unappealing.
Of course the plant itself was a very healthy plant. And it remained that way all season. It even did well early on in the season when I managed to scald all my other seedlings by trying to harden them off too quickly.

The only other good thing that I really can say is, that this is a very child friendly tomato. Most children seem to adore the look of this tomato. I think the whimsical shape appeals to their nature. And any way you can get your kids to eat fruit and vegetables is a good one.
So ....seeing that it is a child friendly fruit/vegetable that is easy to grow, and looks good on a plate, are the reasons why I gave this a 3 instead of a 1 or 2. ....I really wanted to give it a 2.5 but that is not an option.

Out of the 8 seeds germinated only 1 plant lived to produce. Not many blooms, feeding and caring as instructed, but not a good producer yet. Will try again next year.

I give four stars for the germination and the growth. I cannot speak for the fifth star as had to move and didn't see the plant bear fruit.
